Some online payment sites are frustrating

In this day and age, I don't understand online payment sites that won't credit your payment immediately.
Just went to pay my son's student loan, due tomorrow. It won't let me pay it before Monday. I know, at least with this site, I could have scheduled the payment in advance for tomorrow, but if the computer is up and running, credit it now.

My water district is worse. They just went with an outside online payment service......it takes 7 days to credit your payment. So you could pay your bill 6 days before the due date, but it would be a day late.

Our electric bill is set up that way. If I pay it online it takes up to 5 days to credit the payment to my account. And if I call and pay it via crest/debit card they charge me a Western Union fee.

It is frustrating!

I know with my cable company who is so behind the times they can't take the 'credit' with online payments. They have to have the bank cut them a
check and then 'mail' it to them so it takes up to 4 or 5 days.

It is seriously a pain.

It took act of God and 2 pages of paper work and visit to city hall with picture ID to get water bill set up on auto payment.. and wait for it 8 weeks for them to process the first payment.. ugh I think they like to charge everyone the 3 percent late fee. :sad2:

Funny you replied to this today. Just paid bills about an hour ago. The electric company website payment portion is down until Monday for upgrades. I put a check in the mail.

Can't make a car payment right now as their website is down. :( Our electric bill can't be paid online unless you pay a $3.75 'convenience fee'. Convenient that they can charge for something that probably costs less than for someone to process a check. I could set up on auto pay but don't really like everyone dipping into my checking account. The mortgage and insurance companies are enough, thank you very much!

Why not use online banking through your bank? There is no extra fee. I find that my utility bills will be received and credited to my account the next day.

Because for many people it's more trouble than it's worth because it's done via ACH(for which some banks do charge a fee) which is just a digital check and you can end up getting royally screwed if your bank drops the ball which they frequently do and then you get to pay for their mistake.

Plus, they'll pay that 1200$ water bill that was actually a billing error.

Same here on both points. I use a credit card that earns points so I at least feel like I am breaking even on the fee.

That is if you are on auto payments. I schedule when I want my bills to go out and the amount I want to send.
