Some more observations on current crowds

I posted some thoughts on crowds a few days ago here and the same held true all week:

Late July Crowd Update - This Week

One thing I noticed was that DCA crowds are really different right now. With World of Color, the late 11PM closing, the closure of ToT FPs (now re-opened), the GRR FP machines being used for WOC, and the Toy Story 3 movie, everything is shifting.

Toy Story Midway Mania seems more crowded. Pretty much 45 minute lines all day. We went to check it out at 10PM one night hoping for short lines during WOC and the line was 35 minutes long. So we passed. I only got to ride TSMM once on Saturday morning before we checked out. I did the early DCA arrival thing and got to the rope by ITTBAB at 9:45 and was one person back from the rope. I was going to power walk and get there first but they allowed the GRR side open first and by the time we got there the TSMM the line was 15 minutes long. I thought about trying to go to the GRR side beforehand but was concerned about the WOC FP thing causing the backup there being too big. In hindsight that would have been better as they let that line go to TSMM before our line.

It is hard to say what the best thing to do is. I showed up at the rope at 9:45AM and did not get on TSMM until 10:20. So 35 minutes. It would have been better I think just to do the 45 minute wait one day mid-day.

They said the TSMM Single Rider line was discontinued because more often than not the wait in the SR line was longer than the standby line. We did TSMM SR in May 2009 and it took 20 minutes - the standby was posted as 40 that day. FWIW.

On the oher hand, GRR was a walk-on at 9:30 - partly because of cool temperatures and partly because they broke down several times during the afternoon. ToT was 45 minutes standby at 9PM just before GRR was walk-on. Kind of crazy.

Never saw Screamin over 30 minutes. We rode it with a 15 minute wait Friday afternoon at 5PM. TSMM was posted as 45 when I checked at 5PM so we skipped.

Glow Fest is also keeping people busy and around the HBP area. So people are staying at DCA in droves. But people are staying at DL in droves too because of fireworks and Fantasmic. It was pretty heavy at night.

Maybe that is what is happening now. In the past more people tended to leave the parks earlier at night and come first thing the next morning. But the Magic Mornings and all early mornings were light on crowds every day. So I think maybe folks are staying up late and sleeping in making the early mornings and most of the daytime hours at DL and DCA even better than normal. :confused3

On our first MM we showed up at security at 6:30AM and were second there and first at our gate.

On our second MM we showed up at about 6:45AM and were fifth in line at our gate.

Yesterday on Saturday morning I went in to DL for my third MM at 7:50AM (missed the MM to sleep some more) and went staight to FL (I was not trying to do a lot of rides yesterday - it was day 5 and I was repeating a few favorites kind of on a whim before we checked out at lunch). PP looked pretty short and so I hopped in line - it was 10 minutes long at 7:55AM. Did Mr Toad at 8AM and it was a walk-on. Remember this is all after a Magic Morning on a Saturday in mid-summer. On previous MMs I never saw Fantasyland this light.

After MM I went to peek at Nemo Subs and there was almost no line. It was 8:10AM and I almost walked right on. Just missed getting on the next cycle and had to wait for about 5 minutes to get on the next sub. Remember Nemo was open for MM but there was no line 70 minutes later! After I got off Nemo at maybe 8:40AM there was more of a line but it was 10 minutes max. Maybe only a one cycle wait so could have been 5 minutes actually.

Not sure if it was an abberation on crowds but it was like that all week. Mornings seemed very light. Evenings were more crowded - not terribly crowded compared to my previous summer evenings - but more crowded than mornings and even day hours.

On Friday DS18 and his GF went on JC at 2PM with a 5 minute wait.

Nice!! That gives me hope that our week won't be too bad either (aug.21-27) One can only cross fingers!!

Say, would you recommend riding TSMM during the presentation of WoC, or is it too crazy just trying to get to that side of the park?

TSMM did not die down much during WOC when we checked it twice. Maybe close to 11PM it dies down? We were not there to check. :confused3

I haven't found the crowds too bad- we arrived around 7:20 yesterday- it was mm but we didn't have it- got in at 8. Skipped fantasyland. Collected fp and pretty much rode just about everything else (no nemo) had lunch at cc and left around 3.

Dca is fine today- woc fp for hotel guests was easy. Were at the rope for tsm-screamin is down though.

Line at boudin is currently horrible. :)

The crowd patterns have become more of what Hydroguy experienced and described above vs. what he has put in various "tip" threads previously.

When I talked to someone about TSMM discontinuing the SR line, I was told that it was due to people putting their entire families in the SR line trying to skip over the full line, and then balking at the front of the line about actually having to ride SR and not with their child or other family member.

We too found, at the beginning of July, that California Screamin' rarely had much of a wait. Fastpasses weren't needed much of the time for that ride.

Early mornings were far and away the best times to get on most rides with very minimal waits. Even without MM, early is the best rule.

HydroGuy, how was buzz lightyear? A friend in WDW right now said it is busy and a CM said there is a resurgence in popularity since TS3 came out.

Great report, thanks! A quick follow up question, if you happened to notice. How was it leaving the parks? In the past there has been one mass exodus right after fireworks, then sort of a medium steady stream afterward. Is there another mass after WOC? How do the two line up? If I recall, fireworks are at 9:25, so can one sneak out after WOC but before fireworks are over without massive crowds leaving? The reason I ask is to decide whether to take a hotel shuttle or drive (we will not be within reasonable walking distance). In the past, leaving after fireworks on the shuttle has been a nightmare, so wondering whether to try to avoid it if we plan to see the 9 p.m. WOC show.

When TSMM first opened it was our experience that if you had an odd number in your group, a CM automatically put someone from the SR line with you.

But later CM's started asking whoever was going to be riding alone from the standby line if it was OK first.

The only time we declined a SR was when DD was the odd man out in our group. She had no problem riding alone, but she was not comfortable having someone she didn't know with her, nor was I actually.

I'm sure that played into the longer SR wait times.

Thanks for the detailed report. I hope you had a great time!

Buzz was pretty much a walkon for the first hour or 2. Yesterday about 1pm it was 30 min

Yea, yesterday they had to close down the viewing area for the 9pm F!. First time I had ever heard that announcement, although I usually don't watch the 9pm show.

Yea, yesterday was light in the morning and nuts for the night time shows. But after the 10:30F! we were able to hit up Space Mt, Indiana, and Buzz in the last hour.

Yep, DCA is really changing things. It has a whole different vibe to previous years. You can feel the shift that is coming with LM and CarsLand. I think DCA will see huge growth in attendance by 2012 and CarsLand and it will finally find it's place in the world. Crowd patterns will be shifting for the next several years. Once LM comes that will take some pressure off TSMM. With CarsLand and Radiator Springs Racers then I suspect TSMM lines will come back to reality just like Nemo Subs have.

I thought the exact same thing as you! :rotfl: So I went to the rope by A Bug's land but it turns out that the GRR rope gets there before...

Overall, I noticed similar things when I went (a week before you), except for the slowness of Fantasyland. But also, we didn't do any MMs. :confused3

Not sure how well I can answer this. After WOC everyone had to leave by the BugsLand route. It seemed that lots of people did make the turn towards the park exit - but lots turned towards Glow Fest too or made the turn towards Soarin and stayed in the park.

DL fireworks start at 9:30 now, not 9:25 - pretty sure they changed it so the start of the fireworks show and noise does not overlap with WOC 9PM show which finishes at 9:27.

With DL fireworks the people leaving head down Main Street and it is pretty clear they are leaving DL. For WOC it is in the far back of the park and people have choices of where to go after so it is not clear where everyone is going. :confused3

I guess they block off the New Orleans area, but I'm not sure. I was over by HM/Splash Mt. when I heard the announcement. It say the viewing area was full and they recommended you check the times guide for the next show. This is all referring to F! of course.
