Some interesting information about New Jersey

Meeshi -- my mom used to take me shopping to Alexander's all the time when I was growing up. It was such a treat to get a egg cream at the Apple Restaurant located in the store.

It's GREAT to let someone else pump your gasoline!!!!!!! DD keeps trying to teach me this skill when I visit her in Florida but, frankly those gas pumps scare me to death!! Staying warm and dry inside your car is wonderful!

I agree gina2000----I love it here too...usually, that is. Not this week with the snow(and the freezing weather), though.

I've lived in PA for 20 years and still NEVER, EVER pump my own gas. I know every full service station within a 20 mile radius.

I grew up in NY, and we had Korvette's, Alexander's, Bamberger's, and Rickel's...hell, I even remember the jingle for Rickel's. (sad, I know)

I remember from years ago, going through Passaic where they have a sign proudly proclaiming: "Welcome to Passaic - Birthplace of Television." :)

Katerkat...And by those numbers I remember the general area where you are! :) My dad used to work in Kenilworth. We lived near 23, 46, 80 ourselves. :teeth: But we would often veture on to 287, 202, 208, and 17. :) As a matter of fact, 22 used to make occasional bad words come out of my dad's mouth.

I'm surprised how many things I miss about NJ. THEM pumping gas and NOT me! LOL! When I first had to do that in FL, I was completely lost. And in the winter up there, you only cracked open the window so the guy could hear how much gas you wanted.

DINERS! Florida has NO CLUE what a REAL diner is! Pompton Queen on Rt. 23 was my favorite! Please FedEx me a Queen Salad!!!!!!! :Pinkbounc

Taylor ham and cheese on a roll!!! At the bowling alley across from the cable TV company I worked for! And on the way in the morning was a stop at the little breakfast place for a hard roll with butter and a cup of coffee to take to the office. :)

My sister used to work at Ohrbachs! And her first waitressing job was at Stern's I think. One of those stores that nonexistent any more. :(

I don't remember the jingle for Rickel's but I do remember the one for Channel Home Centers...I used to work there. ;) Channel, Channel, Channel, Channel...a whole lot more than a lumber store. Ha!

And I was from the 201 area code. The section that is now 973.

The first Drive-in Movie theater was opened in Camden, NJ,

There is a drive-in-theater scheduled to open in Wall Twp., NJ this year... they are awaiting permits and approval from the township. We're pretty excited about it... we haven't been to a drive-in-movie since the late 70s.

Hey... that would be a great idea for Disney... open a drive-in-theater down in Orlando!

Just label us drive-in-crazies :teeth:

I grew up in Philly and swore I would never live in Jersey but here I am. I went kicking and screaming but I was lored here by a promise of affordable houses and land. I cried when they put the Jersey license plate on my car (front and back!), now everyone thought I was a Jersey driver!

But great schools, open land and someone pumping my gas when it's cold has me sold. I haven't figured out the circles yet. I just close my eyes and press the gas and hope for the best and haven't figured out why you have to be in the right hand lane to make a left turn but I'm getting there. I love it her and I'm never leaving. I wear my license plates proud now.

Silly katerkat, you can't make a left in Jersey!!! LOL
Ok, well, in many situations you cant! Gotta love those jughandles

You know how to properly negotiate a Circle.

It was a sad day indeed when they demo'd one of the last in North Jersey, in Ridgefield. It's been almost a year, and I still can't bear to drive through the abomination of the "intersection" they've replaced it with.....not to mention, I'm afraid to drive through it because it's now worse.....

Beth, I remember every time we drove passed Alexanders it was a game to find "snoopy" in the mural. I don't think my younger sister ever saw him.

Pin Wizard, I grew up in the 201 area code also, Ringwood to be exact.

Does ANYONE remember the Pickle King in Patterson? I remember when I was a kid we went there and bought pickles and "sweetkraut" from him. They were sooooooooo good.

Add in 287 and 202, and that's where my parents live now! And North Jersey drivers are definitely worse than Central Jersey drivers! :teeth:

Katerkat.............that's my neck of the woods......
How about the Somerville circle..........guaranteed to give ya gray hairs !!:scared1:

I LOVE New Jersey and am proud to be a Jersey Girl. Just by coincidence, I am wearing my light blue "Jersey Girl" sweatshirt today :sunny: It keeps me warm during these cold Massachusetts winters :sunny:

No, I was the class of '79. That means that you and I went to school together...."its a small world after all...." :p My sons' friends think its cool that he's in my year book. LOL

Enjoyed the list!
However, its too cold today for me to be thinking positive thoughts about NJ! I wish I was in Florida!
Just had a taylor ham, egg and cheese sandwich this morning! Good stuff!

A good, quick breakfast is a hard roll with butter.

Does anyone remember the Route 9 Drive-In in Sayreville, just south of the Edison Bridge? We were so sad when they tore it down to build Amboys Multiplex.

And hard rolls with butter....yummmmy! Whenever I go home, I have to get a hard roll from Daylight Bakery in South Amboy. You just can't get a good hard roll down here.

LOL! had to laugh at the post!! It's so true! When I talk to someone from out of state that asks if I go to the beach often, I have to think a moment before I answer since we say down the shore. Beach I think Fl, Shore...Jersey. I have also gotten what exit? and I have to ask "off what road?" cause I don't live near the turnpike or the expressway and we NEVER use them anyway....back roads baby!! The extent of my highway usage is 78,22,31,12 ...287 scares me!! I hate going to Flemington since there are always "out of towners" who STOP in the middle of the circle...drives me nuts! Somerville circle is now just plain confusing since they changed it a few years back. I just slow down, look and floor it, hey! that's how I was taught!! I also don't like the assumption that it's all a CITY either. Ever heard of Jersey Cows??? lol. We are RURAL! No stop lights, no sidewalks. We also go by County and then Township. We're 908 btw, so it's Central here.
