A few things I've found interesting when comparing the POTC movie to history...

- In POTC they talk like Piracy is a dying art. Well this can't be true, seeing as how they use Port Royal. Pirating in the terms we think about had it's heyday in the 18th century, and Port Royal was desimated by an earthquake in the late 1600's. This means that POTC would have to take place in the 1600's.

- If the last fact was indeed the case, then something else is in question. The fact that in POTC, they talk like all pirates are bad. This is a little strange, for the fact that a lot of pirates were actually Privateers. When Jack Sparrow took over the Black Pearl in the first movie, Norrington probably would have been looking to hire Jack, rather than hang him.

- In POTC, they talk like Tortuga was Pirate heaven. Well depending on whatever time POTC is taking place, that isn't exactly the case. Nassau in the Bahamas was more like Pirate heaven. Back in the day, it was a small city run by pirates, for pirates.

There is more I found, but I don't have the time to type those out. So yeah, discuss I guess.

I thought about htat while watching the movie recently.
They're talking about the blank edges of the map filling in (read as 1600s) then saying jack is a dying breed (read as 1800s)

idk if anyone cares but i went on a cruise and i saw where they taped it. Its by some vocalno.....well i think POTC I ....lol

POTC was filmed in the Caribbean near castaway cay (where the did most if not all of the island scenes in the first and second ones)

I was wondering if they used Disney's island to film those scenes. I figured they would, since it'd be much easier.

And I had no idea that Port Royal was even real. I thought it was made up..cool. All directors and producers and the rest of them should all research the info more carefully. Almost all movies have historic blunders in them..

Port Royal, Tortuga, all very real. Port Royal is in Jamaca, and Tortuga is in present day Haiti, (sp).

Only problem is a lot of Port Royal is underwater. :confused3

Also another thing is that unlike in the movie, and in most views on the typical pirate ship, the captain didn't really have total control. Actually, only in battle did he have any REAL big say in what happened. Usually, the captain was just another Joe. A Pirate ship was actually one of the few true democracies of the time. Everyone had a say, everyone got a cut. They elected captains...etc.

That's really interesting.
And Haiti is like beside the DR right?

Yup. It's on the same island actually.

I would also like to sort of correct something I said.

In the 17th century at least. Around 1720 or so, hiring Privateers was pretty much frowned upon. Although the practice never did really die during then. The American's hired Privateers to raid British ships during the Revolution seeing as how we didn't really have a Navy. One that could go toe to toe with the British at least.

They can't use Disney's island. Because from what I know, that is Castaway Cay and they have tons of guests going there each week.
They probably shot it on another island. There are tons of little Cays down in the Carribbeand and the Bahamas
