Some help about Fort Wilderness Cabins

I tried getting some info from those on the camping board but no one is responding so I thought I would try here. We are a family with 4 young children, we have never stayed at the cabins so I need some guidance about where we should request our cabin to be. Anyone out there have any knowledge of FW? Is the most important thing going to be close to a bus stop? I am just clueless on this one. We leave in about 10 days so I need to get this figured out.

I have not stayed there yet but I was really considering it this trip but 2 of our party decided to not go so we opted for WL. Fort Wilderness is very spread out and it can be a 10 min. hike to the pool or food area, with little legs you wil want to be near the buses IMOHO.

transportaion.
you will need to go to the nearest bus stop to you...that bus will then drop you at the outpost or settlement where you will have to transfer again to your direct bus to parks and such, and keep the hoop dee doo showtimes in mind too this year we waited thru 3 busses because of the show, also keep in mind that you sometimes share busses with the wilderness lodge too. you will have 1 bus for your loops ( purple ) that bus will stop at all the internal stops on its route ( they can fill up quick) My fam stayed at the campgrounds this year as they do every year

The pools-
there are only 2 and they are not really in comfortable walking distance from each other, are supposed to be heated but it sure didnt feel heated to my family also no food stands at either pool they even got rid of the snack machines , you can still get sodas. no slides or hot tubs

Stores-
There are 2 , not really walking distance from the cabins, maybe if you are as close to the meadows trading post as they could put you.

*pros

campfire program- FREE!!
you will need to catch a bus to see the show save the long walking for parks!!! this is held behind the meadows trading post, we always made a day at the meadows pool and would walk to the show ( very close) that way we would avoid the mad dash!!!

petting farm- FREE!!
I havent done it in a few years but i loved it as a kid!!! free!!!! and you can see the horses too

water parade-FREE!!
fun fun fun and a great view too!!! plan your bus ride that is usually around hoopdeedoo showtimes

golf carts- NOT FREE!!!
but so much fun and you can avoid the internal bus fiasco
cheaper to rent a car for the day then a golf cart tho.

I'm not much help cos this is our first trip and first stay at FW cabins, but did you see this thread? It was quite helpful to me:

We have two kids in stroller so I put in a request for "close to bus stop" originally, but did add a request for loop 2500 based on these comments. I like that is's more north than others so walking to the campfire should be easier and the proximity to the pool and bus stop. We shall see if we get our request!

I think I can help you..........We stayed at the cabins last Jan 2004, and had a great time. It was my dh, dd (3) and my mom. We were in cabin 2607.....I would request a cabin in the 2600 loop. You are right across from the pool, laundry facility and a bus stop.

I will tell you, we rented a golf cart, and personally I would not stay there without one. It is a HUGE place, and the internal bus system would take you a while to get to places. With the golf cart, it's a 5min ride to catch the boat to MK. Plus...the golf cart was a big hit with everyone in the family.

They do have a convenient store there for groceries, but I would stop at a grocery store before arrival, we arranged that with our trnasportaion company from the airport...Happy Limo.

It was nice to eat breakfast in the room, cook some meals if we wanted, and to have a separate are to be while my daughter was sleeping. There is a nice deck off the cabin too....she enjoyed chasing lizards on it!

I'm staying at the FT. Wilderness cabins for the first time this January. Here's what I'd like to know:

Is it really worth the money to get a golf cart EVERY day? Isn't it like $49 a day? That's alot extra money for the trip. What about just for the day you plan to spend at the resort? Or just MK & Epcot days (we're planning on driving our car to MGM and AK)?

I didn't ask for any specific loop. Will I be sorry? Is there a loop that is just awful?

Here's another vote for the 2600 loop. Its very shady and off the main road so you don't get the noise from the busses. Its just across the street form the pool and laundry. The bus stop is also right at the end of the loop, but I can't comment on the busses as we never used them.

We felt we needed the golf cart and wouldn't stay there again without one, but plenty of people report doing just fine without one.

The kitchen was great for breakfast and snacks. The extra space is really a plus as well. We are trying something new next year, jsut for variety. We had a great time at FW though and would recommend it especially with young kids!

We felt a golf cart was a must when we stayed there. I agree, they are very expensive. Considerably more expensive than a rental car. (Must be a real profit center for Disney if National can rent a mid-size car to us for less than Disney can rent a golf cart to us!) Nonetheless, even with a golf cart, we found the transporation to be inconvenient. Without a golf cart, I wouldn't want to even try staying there -- especially with young children.

....driving to Fla, so we will have our vehicle. Is it convenient to just use our car to get around Ft Wilderness?

I just thought of another question: How is the bug situation during February??

You can' t drive your personal vehicle around Ft. Wilderness to get to all the different places. There is no parking anywhere, except in front of your cabin and in front of one of the general stores (30 minute time limit I believe). We rented a golf cart for our stay...a little expensive, but well worth it as we could just hop in and go wherever, whenever we felt like it.
