Just to give credit where it is due:
Last fall, I used I used 279 of our points to book a park view room at the Grand Californian Hotel for a six-night stay in early August of this year.
Back on August 10, we checked in, and went out to dinner. When we returned to our room, the message light on our phone was flashing. The message was from my brother in law, asking my wife to call him immediately. I could tell from the tone of his voice that this was something serious. My wife called, to learn to our collective shock that her father had unexpectedly died that evening.
After advising the hotel and DVC of our circumstances, it took two days to work out return travel arrangements to the funeral back east, so we ended up checking out on Wednesday, three days realier than scheduled.
Now, per the membership rules, I assumed I had just lost 156 points of booked time. To quote the policies on cancellation:
"If you leave the property earlier than your scheduled departure date, or if you don't show up for your stay at all, the Vacation Points associated with that reservation will be forfeited. ."
However, I learned last Friday that based on this bereavement situation, the Grand Calfornian has agreed to let DVC rebate me all of those 156 points. In fact, I was able to use them yesterday to book a "make up" vacation for the family in October.
