I just had a somber realization but I hope I am wrong.

I just purchased 150 Hilton Head points and booked a 2 bedroom unit for the June. For part of my stay the cost is 31 points a night for a weekday stay. But one of my nights enters into the higher season and it will cost me 38 points. Then there are the weekends which I decided to pay using case because the point cost if too high. Here is where I had my somber realization. The member cost for staying at Hilton Head is $145.50 a night for both weekday and weekend. Factoring in the cost of points based only on member fees it works out the same as paying cash and that is for a weekday points stay. If a cash stay equals the cost of members fees in the end why bother owning points? Don't get me wrong I like being able to stay using cash at a low rate but did I just waste money buying a contract at Hilton Head if I could have just paid for reservations using cash and the member discount? Why not own the minimum of 25 points and use cash for everything? It seems like if I paid for my entire stay using cash, being very very generous not to consider the high point cost of weekends, it would work out to spending the same on a reservation vs member fees.

Do you understand what I am trying to explain?

What is the upside to having these points now when I could just use cash. I know that the cash ressie price will go up but so will the member fees go up over time.

Is HHI the only DVC resort where you'll be using points? Are you a member at any other DVC Resort?

I'm a little confused-the member cost for a 2 bedroom in June is around $350/night.

Are cash rooms even available during the summer months? I thought things were pretty much booked solid during the summer, and it was only during the colder months that the deep cash discounts were readily available.

Weekends are readily available in June, at least. I've even booked a Friday night just by going to the front desk on a Thursday and asking. I always pay cash Friday nights because we only have 100 HH points..but I only wish I was paying $145.

Buy where you love to stay. You also need to look at the numbers and your vacation patterns.

Remember, the only reason to buy a DVC ownership is to save money by pre-purchasing your resort stays. If your not saving money, being a member doesn't make sense.

I doubt you would get a cash room during the week in the summer. Weekends are really high points, Saturday is even higher than Friday so members tend to checkout before the weekend.

$145 sounds too cheap for a 2 bedroom in the summer.
