Yet another reason for me to extol the virtures of a CPAP machine.
Pretty much all my life I snored. I was tired all the time, would fall asleep at people's houses at the drop of the hat, and couldn't drive more than 15 minutes without thinking I was going to doze off (and almost did, which is pretty scary).
Snoring is a verious serious health matter. Snoring is normally caused by Sleep Apnea - which means the muscles in the back of their throat relax to the point that they actually cut off your airway. The snoring is the flapping of this muscle as air tries to get past it. Not only is snoring annoying, it means you are stopping breathing in your sleep. I won't even get into all the health and safety issues that snoring causes - the list is impressive.
Sleep Apnea can be diagnosed with a simple, painless overnight sleep study. You are hooked up to a machine and they monitor your sleep to see exactly what is wrong. For me, that meant I stopped breathing 64 times AN HOUR. I never was getting REM sleep and as a side effect was keeping my whole family up.
Sleep Apnea is eliminated through surgery (not always effective and very painful) or by the use of a CPAP. Since snoring is the muscles in the back of your throat, normally breath right strips have no effect. A CPAP is a machine about the size of a bread box that supplies a constant airflow through a mask into your nose. It's easy to sleep with and cures the snoring instantly.
Your insurance company normally will cover most if not all of the costs of the study and CPAP machine. I would HIGHLY recommend you get a referral to a sleep clinic and just be tested. After my friends and family heard I had done this, I have had 5 of them be tested and are also now using CPAP machines. Yes, it is heriditary.
And for guys that are afraid to do it (which is a common reason), think of it this way: what would you rather have - a cranky wife that gets no sleep who doesn't want to be in the same room with you, or a restful wife that is thankful that you did this and welcomes you to bed?
Get tested! It's easy!
