Solo trip

I've done 3 ABD's as a solo traveler, and I've loved each & every one. It's a fabulous way to travel solo because you have people to share your experiences with, you can feel safe traveling with the group & the Adventure Guides, you can actually sight-see as you travel (if you're driving yourself, there's only so much you can see as you drive), you don't have to shlep your own luggage, etc, etc.

I've signed up for my 4th solo trip already. I'm very spoiled now, and am going to have a hard time traveling any other way!

I never felt left out or out of place. Depending on how you feel about traveling with kids, you could also look at Adults Only trips.

Feel free to ask any questions. I'm happy to answer. I can't think of a better way to travel as a solo.

Thank you so much for your response!

That sounds perfect! I love to travel and have never been out of the USA. I trust Disney CM and service, so I figured they would be the best bet for my first overseas trip expirence.

Now off to pick where I want to go, there are so many choices!

We had a solo traveler on our family ABD last year and he was welcomed by the group. I'm sure he never felt left out of anything. So, if you can't find an adults-only trip to fit your schedule, I think you would be fine with a family trip. Unless you don't want to be around other people's kids. :)

I have done two solo ABD and have my third one booked. I had a great time on each of the trips!!

Dear sayhello,

I've just read through your Alaska trip report. Thank you so much for being so detailed and including so many photos. My husband retired a year ago and I thought our travels were going to start, but a year and a half later I've finally figured out that he's not terribly interested in traveling.

I have no problem going solo and it seems like ABD will be the perfect fit for me.

Thanks again for the super Alaskan report.

Wow, you are quite welcome! I'm really glad you enjoyed it.

I decided if I waited for someone to either want or be able to travel with me, that I was going to be waiting for a long time. I totally agree that ABD is a fabulous way to travel solo. I think you'll really enjoy yourself.

Are you thinking about the Alaska trip? As you can tell, I think it's great!

Let me know if you have any questions!

I did my first ABD trip solo back in 2006. It was absolutely fantastic. I never felt out of place. And, I ended up making some friends on the trip, 2 of whom have become among my very best friends (seeing them this evening, in fact). We all traveled together on the second trip in 2007.

Go solo and have fun! You'll have a great time!

I did the DIS ABD Backstage Magic in April 2010 as a solo traveler, and enjoyed it so much that I signed up for two DIS sponsored ABD trips in 2011 (Backstage Magic in April, and Knights & Lights in September).

These trips, in my opinion, are outstanding. I met great people on the ABD, and felt very comfortable, very quickly. I've wanted to go on a trip to Europe for a long time now, but never wanted to do it on my own...going on the ABD Knights & Lights is perfect for me, I don't have to worry about anything.

I'm also looking into going solo on a trip. It looks like pricing is given assuming double occupancy. Did you find your trips to be a lot more expensive traveling solo?

And I'm glad to hear others had good trips. I really want to get some travel in but am having trouble finding someone to go with and this seems like a pretty safe option to see some cool places.

The single supplement for most ABD's comes out to about 40% of the "double occupancy" price. So if you're looking at, say, the Viva Italia trip, and the double occupancy price quoted was $4,299 per person, the price for a solo would be $4,299 + $1,720 = $6,019. It's actually a lot lower than a lot of other companies. Unfortunately, there's really no way around it if you can't find someone to travel with.

And yes, I've found this to be a very safe option to see some really cool places!

I have unsuccessfully made 3 attempts to go solo. I am solo in real life but daughter cannot BELIEVE I should go. Sooo here we go. Next trip I am not telling a soul. I want a solo trip as it is on my bucket list.:rotfl2:

HoneyDiane - Do you mean your daughter doesn't let you go solo in the sense that she goes with you, or that you don't get to go at all??

If you're up for it, I would encourage any woman to go on a solo trip. (I think men should too, but probably don't get as much grief from friends and family about it).

Not an ABD, but I went to Maui last September for my first solo trip in 15 years. I had SO MUCH FUN! :) Within an hour of landing, I'd been invited to a beach party, gotten lost and realized it didn't matter, and was hiking by myself in Iwo Valley.

Best trip ever!

I'd never get to pull off an ABD solo, though. My son (8) would be devastated! :rotfl2:

Solo traveler here and I'm thinking of doing the Hollywood and Disneyland tour on 10/23/11. It's an adults only tour and think it would be fun. My teenage sons and sister who I usually travel with are tired of Disney, but I'm not! Rather than drag them there again, I'm thinking of doing this tour on my own. Has anyone been on this specific tour as a single traveler?

my 2 cents. I would do ABD solo anytime--and here's why. WDW and DVC folks (those who would do ABD) are, in general, welcoming people. I am certain that those on ABD will be welcoming persons, wanting to get to know you and wanting to share fabulous travel experience---go for it!
FYI--we did a day tour from Florence (not ABD) and were paired at a table with a women with a 6 month old baby--taveling alone!
What a wonderful treat! She was on maternity leave (actually laid off from her job as a bond trader in NYC) and was going to wedding in Europe the next week to join her husband--she decided to fly in a week early and experience Italy--with a baby--yikes! We (family of 6), had a perfect day with her--and met her again, when she was in Rome, and her tour guide directed us to the perfect cheap cafe in Rome.
Life is short--I would book ABD in a heartbeat as single--have a great time! Elaine
