Solid Ground Rocking After End of Cruise

Just an FYI.... I had MdDS and per my neurologist, it was made worse or occurred because I took preventative medication. This prevented me from feeling the ship motions and causing my sense of balance and what I was visually seeing to differ. This caused a delay in the reaction to my brain's perceived sense of motion. This is not always the case, but I did want to warn you about my personal experience. Also, this disorder is more prone in women and migraine sufferers.

Oh yikes! That's me...classic migraines, regularly. So, I'd be better off NOT to take the seasick meds(if I can help it)....I always take them on the flight, but I'll skip them next day when we board ship and see how it goes. Great information. What is the treatment for this disorder?

Yes. I got mild sea sickness the first day on our first cruise. Then when we got off it was bad for a couple of days (with feeling the motion and dizzy). Second cruise I took bonine for the duration of the cruise and a couple of days after and it was not a problem at all. If you take a motion sickness med and stop it the moment you get off the ship, it can make adjusting to land worse. You need to keep taking it for 2-3 days until your body adjusts.

What to do, what to do?

Treatment options are extremely limited and some work for a few but not all sufferers. I have been on long term Topamax and rarely have episodes any more. On our last cruise (Jan.), I did not use the patch to prevent sea sickness and I waited until I felt the motion. Then and only then I treated it with Zofran (prescribed by my neurologist). It is very short acting and that worked to get me through the worst part. This is the first cruise that I have not had severe land symptoms from!!!! True MDdS last for a very long time and symptoms can come back any any time. For me, this happened one time when I was trying to pick up something on the floor of my car as my husband was driving. He swerved to prevent an accident and my symptoms came back. Again, it was my sense of balance differing from what I was seeing. This type of reoccurance happened frequently over 6 months, before finally seeming to disappear.

my doctor prescribes the patch for my trips. I get a few extra for my "land sickness" takes about 2 weeks for my head to adjust to being on land.
without it my balance is wonky and nausea is constant.

I get it too and we've sailed over 11 times. I just pretend I'm back on the ship. Makes the cruise fun last longer. It does go away so don't worry about it. :tinker:

I don't usually feel as much walking or standing as I do when I lay down after a cruise. I feel like the bed is swaying. It usually lasts about two days for me and then I'm fine -- but it is a weird sensation for sure.

I think there are a few people who have had extended symptoms but for the most part, it goes away quickly for most people and isn't something to worry about. I had it bad after our first cruise, when I stopped taking bonine on the last day. Now I start my bonine a day or two before I leave, continue it through the cruise (1 at night), and take it for 2-3 days after I'm off the boat. That has worked great for me.

Stillness Illness - I get it after a day on the lake fishing in the chop. But never experienced it after a cruise.

I've found temporary relief by heading over DHS and Riding Tower of Terror - the ground rocking feeling goes away for about an hour, then I "have" to ride it again - oh darn. :rotfl2:

But seriously, ToT does give me some temporary relief. Must have something to do with getting the inner ear moving in a different direction than on the cruise.

Only happened once and that was my first Disney cruise when I wore the patch. Very sick for days after I took the patch off. I actually sought medical attention as I thought I had some sort of brain tumor. I have done nine more Disney cruises and usually just take the meclazine they provide on the ship and haven't had a problem since. Looking forward to our Disney cruise in three weeks!

My first cruise last February I was fine on the boat but when I got home I felt like I was rocking. But I chalked it up to the weather changes. Typically when the seasons change I sometimes get dizzy if I bend down to pick something up or move to quickly so I figured the cold to warm to cold weather caused it, however it lasted almost two weeks.

We shall see this July when I get off the Dream what happens

A friend's wife had it so bad she was very sick and incapacitated for 3-4 days after their cruise. She's sworn off cruising forever. I recommend taking your sea sick meds for a couple days post cruise to help.

I was just coming on to write this!

I have pretty bad motion sickness on the cruise, so I definitely take those pills. I've noticed that after the cruise I am fine as long as I take my meds right up to the Night before departure. I may take a few days after too for my next cruise since its a 2 week one

I have to take motion sickness meds to ride ToT without puking! (or any other big moving ride).

My wife has found that once we disembark, the best thing to do is not immediately get in a car and go on the 10-hour drive back home. Our last cruise, we went to the World for a couple of days after disembarkation and she was fine for the trip home. Something about keeping moving under her own power really helped. I'm not going to argue, since I get a few extra days at either WDW or Universal that way without her arguing. We're staying a couple of extra days in Seattle after our upcoming Princess cruise for the exact same reason.

This happened to both my daughter and me after our first cruise in December. We would be doing something at WDW and suddenly one of us would say, "My ship is rocking, is yours?" It wasn't constant and only lasted a couple of days. It wasn't anything terribly bothersome.

Well, now I'm concerned! To take it or not take it! What do most of you take? Bonine or a prescription???
