Sold a DVC Contract, paid bills

Like the title says.
I sold 1 one my contracts. Not because I needed to, but travel times are changing.
So with the money I received from the sale, I paid off several bills.
I still have 4 contacts and can keep going to Disney, but feeling a little blue right now instead of relief.
Has this happen to anyone else?

We have been happy when we have sold some of our dvc contracts. Happy the large annual dues payment is no longer our responsibility!

When i first went to Disney I read a comment that said "once you go, all you will do is try and get back" I never would have believed them.
But here we are always trying to get back.

we bought dvc back in '99 largely because of the ability to easily trade out for other timeshares and use points for the cruise line. during the time we owned we would bank and borrow to accumulate 3 years worth of points-did big disneyland, wdw and disney cruise trips, traded out for an alaskan cruise. enjoyed it but hated the dues-only advantage (confirmed by my then cpa) was dvc broke down their dues statements such you could take maximum tax write-offs,

i got a gut feeling in 2008 to sell. we did with no regrets. the amount we save via the dues we can use for vacations, and since there is nowhere near the ability to use the points elsewhere it would just be prepaying disney to stay on their property. when we ran the numbers we ended up ahead by virtue of the trips/accommodations and the return on the sale.

i think dvc is a good deal if it's financially feasible to go there and use it but if (like us) it entails costly travel you wouldn't ordinarily do then not so much (esp. now that park tickets rise and fall given the day of the week/whim of the mouse men).

No but big hugs. It must've been hard to let go of something you love so much, even with more in your back pocket. Sounds like you made the right decision for you though, even though it was hard, and good for you for doing so!

Now that grand kids are starting to come, I am entertaining the idea again. Hubby says no way, as he is afraid of the dues.

I don’t own DVC but I did a little research for myself awhile back and it depends on how many points you own but 1-3k a year was typical.

it's been over 10 years since we sold, we didn't have a massive number of points but we were paying over $200 per month for boardwalk. it went up each year as different projects needed upkeep/ property taxes increased so i imagine that given it's age and how much property taxes go up over the years it could me a more substantial amount.

How much money did you make when you sold? Real estate should appreciate in value. If you are not able to sell these contracts at a profit then they are a poor deal.

I just paid mine. I have 230 Boardwalk points and they were $1645 for the year.

The annual maintenance fees vary. Ours, at Riviera, are very high and are $8 and change per point ($8.3082 to be exact). We have 200 points there so we are a bit over $1600 this year.

But we are also doing two full weeks at Disney in a deluxe resort for those points. It’s a lot. But, with two young kids, it’s worth it to us because just our room at a moderate was costing around $2200 for one week...and we were feeling a bit cramped by the middle of the week (my younger child still naps so we take breaks in the middle of the day).

What kind of "bills"? I say if you were paying interest you should definitely feel relief from having that weight removed.

i honestly don't recall. i only remember that when we ran rough numbers on how much the kind of accommodations we used for the stays we did along with taking 2 cruises (1 dvc/1 hal-they had trade outs back then) we ended up ahead for what we had paid over the handful of years we owned. we did have to pay a commission to the company we used to broker the deal but even with it we figured we ended up ahead.

that said-when we sold there were still lots of trade outs offered through dvc which was what appealed to us and many others. it was allot easier to sell a dvc timeshare than anything else out there at the time.

I've got 4 contracts and I've considered selling off the smaller contract - 50 points- not because I need the money for bills but to try and downsize what I have. Problem is, I just keep needing those points!

I've felt blue when I had to cancel a vacation, so maybe a little like you are feeling? The good part of that was beginning the planning process all over again. The bad part was when I was inside 30 days and I had to rent my points. The good part of this: DVC points will rent if there is availability. I had no problem doing it and made some extra money that I used for stockpiling a few annual passes. That made me consider using rental money to buy tickets, but since then I haven't done it. But, I know I have that option if the time ever comes.

And the selling price of my contracts is more than double what I paid. Back in 2000, I never would have believed this, and when I look at today's prices for Riviera, I find them unbelievable. But - it worked for us. DVC is still working for us and I'm still loving my Disney trips.

I sold 2 contracts a couple years ago--SSR and BWV. The kids are grown and we just don't get to WDW very much anymore. I was kind of sad about it, but it was kind of a relief, too, not to have to keep track of those points anymore.

We still have 75 VGC points and go often. Dues went down from about $1500/year to under $500, so that's nice.

We own a very small 75 points at SSR. Annual dues are $502. Depending on time of year, can get 4 nights a year at the poly for that. Seems like a smoking deal to me at this point compared to resort rates. I'm so amazed that the mod resort we stayed at just 6 years ago is about 2.5x what it was then.

We've also sold DVC contract points in the past. Back in 2010 we had 4 active DVC contracts for a total of 585 points. That year we bought our retirement home 25 miles from WDW (we are now full time Florida residents) and sold off 3 of the contracts. We now get along just fine with 210 points.
