I called and made my reservations for SOG last week and they let me know about their dining package offer. Has anyone used it? Find it worth it? How was the food at their resturants?

Also I read a few posts that they walked to the Poly to catch the monrail. How far was the walk? Did you go to the Poly for dining at all?

Let's see what else how was the pool? aafes shop? Anything else?

Haven't been to WDW since 99 or 98 can't remember which. It'll be my son's first trip and will be a total surprise. I just love tax returns   :cool1: :flower:

The walk to the Poly is only about 10 minutes - as far as the dining plan goes... My understanding of this plan is that it is good only at the SOG for the breakfast buffet and for dinner. We opted not to take advantage of this because we didn't want to feel forced to leave the parks to make it back to the SOG in time for dinner and there are many times when my DH, DD and DS are just as happy with a snack instead of a buffet meal. It isn't like the Dining package offered by Disney where you have a variety of places to choose from to eat - your only chocie is the SOG....

Okay, let me try to answer these... we were at SoG in Jun 04, so my answers will reflect that time period:

*Dining offer - I declined; it only includes their on-site restaurants, two meals a day - one breakfast or lunch each day and one dinner. From what I recall, you only get one at Mangino's, the rest at the Garden Gallery buffet or Evergreen's.

Evergreen's was pretty good, we thought. About on a par with what you'd get at a TGI Friday's, Bennigan's, etc.

The Garden Gallery's breakfast buffet had plenty for everyone, even the most picky eaters. Of course, being one of those most picky eaters, I played it safe and ordered a la carte (both because I wanted specific things made fresh, and because I knew I wouldn't eat that much for breakfast). We didn't eat dinner in there.

*AAFES store - not bad, the stuff is Disney branded, but not Disney World branded. Great if your kiddos are younger and won't know the difference ;). You won't find merchandise sold at the parks, but you will find snacks, toiletries, etc. at Shoppette prices rather than resort prices, which is a plus. They also had beer & wine.

*Walk to the Poly - maybe 10-15 minutes, depending on how much you dawdle? Definitely can be done in ~10 minutes if walking briskly... if your kiddos tend to see it as a nature hike, could take longer, but that's half the fun of vacation!

*Meals at the Poly - we only ate there once, in their little hamburger shop (can't even remember what it was called). It was okay, just typical counter service... we really wanted to have a meal there but just ran out of time.

*Pools - beautiful pools, great hot tub which seemed very well maintained. My main concern was that there were no lifeguards. Although both my husband and I are good swimmers, we didn't let our daughter swim past the 5 foot depth, which irritated her a bit, since she can swim, but we didn't want to have to rely upon ourselves to save her should she hit her head, panic, etc.

I'm guessing your son is a toddler. If so, you will absolutely love the grounds. They are like a huge, wonderful park to explore... tons for little ones (and not so little ones!). My mom took my then 13yo BIL and 8yo DD
on multiple nature walks, which they just loved.

If you have any other questions, I'll try to help!

weregoingtodw ... tks for the info. Good to know wondered about the store. I'm sure we'll be making a stop in there on day one. Yes my son is only 4 but he thinks he can take on the world. He is so like his father :flower: I think we'll prob do the monrail mostly. How was the bus service from SOG? Also sounds silly but did the store have milk and yogurt products? Sounds silly but I wondered my son is still quite attached to his evening snacks. Now with the walk to the Poly only being 10 or 15 mins I wonder if I should get a stroller. I know he isn't going to feel like walking back to the room after a long day.

Tks again! I am pretty excited hope the trip goes well.

I'd absolutely get a stroller; it's nothing to see 6 and 7 year olds riding around in one, especially in the evenings. They just get so pooped... and you'll get pooped carrying him otherwise ;).

As for milk & yogurt, they did not have them when I was there before, but were supposed to get a dairy case in the following weeks, so I'd guess they do by now. They should probably also have yogurt in the breakfast grab 'n' go area.

HTH!

SOG also has a "Mini-shuttle" to the end of their driveway (cross the street, and you are on the Poly grounds)......Basically, it's an employee driving a large golf-cart....He will happily give you rides if you catch him (find him)....He's not there all of the time, but do be on the lookout. He accepts tips, BTW - We got a ride one day, tipped him a couple bucks - and the next day he came zooming up to us to give us a ride when we had started down the path (hadn't seen him). It cuts out about 60% of that walk to the Poly.
((Tipping isn't necessary)).

One more thing ---- Someone suggested that the grounds are beautiful (they are...) and great for exploring (that too...) ---- just keep in mind that they DO have alligators....I SAW ONE crawl into the water right in front of the resort (The one with the little waterfall)...He was on the side of the rode, and when I got close, he spooked and went for a swim. He was small (4 -5 ft?) - and I mentioned it to the security guard who was non-plussed and said that they relocate them when they get big - but he sees them all the time.
SOG has signs up about the alligators......but I never imagined I'd actually see one......Jill
