I'm sure this has been discussed before, but...

Several shows ago, I remember Kevin mentioning that there's software available to convert DVDs to iPod. Is there a good one out there that people prefer? Is there a free one that anyone recommends?

Thanks!

I don't remember what Kevin recommended, I've had good luck with http://handbrake.fr/ but I don't try to convert copy protected DVDs, either.

I could never get Handbrake to work without crashing, so have to download movies/tv shows straight into mp4 format :(

:goodvibes

I second Cucusoft. I converted several of my DVDs for my iPod and the quality was great.

I don't have a problem with handbrake crashing. I did learn that the iPhone won't play (it won't even show) a converted video file if the size is too large. So, while I like to have high-resolution files, it is pointless to attempt for the iPod or iPhone.

Also a fan of Handbrake. It doesn't work directly with protected DVDs, but there are always ways around that too.

You can setup Handbrake to convert 2 files by adding different profiles to your queue - one optimized for AppleTV/High-res and another for ipod/ipohone.

I am also a big fan og Handbrake, it works great. I just use the low-res and they look great on the ipod, the screen is so small the low res works just fine and I leave the full size file on an external Hard Drive...

I use Handbrake in the "iphone" or "ipod" format (don't remember which). I also use DVD43 to get around the encryption. I've done several movies this way and it works great. ;)

It takes forever though-you're better off doing it before you go to bed, it can take several hours per movie.

I use something called PodMaxx and it seems to work to convert my DVDs for my iPod Classic

IS there a way to put movies that you buy from Itunes and burn them to a DVD for play in a regular DVD Player?

I am starting to convert everything over digitally as well as begun buy my tv shows and such from Itunes but ti would be nice to be able to play in the car.

Feel free to pm.

Thanks

If you check out cucusoft's website, it does look like they might have something. You have to pay for their programs tho.

I use MagicDVD Ripper. Easy and works great! There is a free trial with full functioning capability so you can try it out on a few to see if you like it. Takes about 40 mins to rip a full movie and ends up about half a gig in size.

Cucusoft is great - well worth the money - I have not had any issues with it a all. Haven't tried any other ones but we downloaded the Cucusoft sample software to try and thought it was awesome. I was actually suprised at how well it worked, I thought it might have some kinks or somethin, but no kinks so far. I have a habit of sounding like an infomercial when I really like something. My mother teases me when I talk about my Vidalia chopper! haha
