Half the fun of taking pictures for me is the ability to make the photos sit up and sing! Anyone else find this?

Examples:

Colour filter, in this case red.

High contrast black and white (guess where!)

Borders and ageing.

Nice examples. What program do you use? I pretty much try to stay straight out of the camera with just slight tweaks in contrast and saturation.

This is one I was just playing with recently. I used both Topaz Simplify and Nik Color Efex to tweak it in PS. It transformed a boring, throw-away shot into something I really enjoy.

BirdsOfPreyDave, I love it!

I use a variety of apps, Mac only sadly. My favourite is Analogue and close runners up are FX Photo Studio and ColorStrokes.

The way filters are used greatly effect my opinion of them. If you are using programs like Topaz and Nic to enhance a photos they can be a very powerful and useful tool. They can also create some beautiful results.

The problem IMHO is that they are far too often used to cover up bad photos. The Instragram craze is a perfect example. When it first started (for about a week :)) I thought they were neat effects, but now, except for a rare exception, I cant stand them. Sorry most bad photos are bad photos no mater what filter you apply to them. :rotfl2:, but I guess I'm the exception to the rule, because alot of people like them. Another problem is that too many people look at a photo with a filter effect applied and think the person shooting it is a better photographer/artist than they usually are.

A favourite of mine is cell shading, made popular by Jet Grind Radio for the Dreamcast :)

all fine examples but I like the motion filter in Photoshop

(with Canon Rebel XSi /450D and 55-250IS)
