I always wondered if that had something to do with it, I live within an hour of Davenport! We call it a couch but it was just as common to hear it called a davenport (mostly my grandmother and her friends) while growing up.
I call it either a sofa or a couch, but I think I use the word sofa more often. When I was a kid (living across the river from BrerLizzie) we called it a davenport.
Never heard it called a davenport before in my LIFE. In my head, a couch has a loungey-type meaning to it. Like, a sofa is the one in your parlor where company sits. A couch is in the basement/TV room....
They are different pieces of furniture. In our house we have two couches and two davenports. The davenports are a style usually with prominent legs and aren't over stuffed. Our davenports are antiques (made in the 1940's in a "modern' style). Kind of like this:
