We are considering staying at a 1B in one of the villas because there will be 3 adults. We will be using the sofa bed in the living room area. Are they very comfortable? I remember my parents from the 70's that had a bar going across under the mattress and waking with a back ache after sleeping there. Are Disney's villas better than the olden days ones? Or would getting 2 regular rooms a better deal?

Thanks in advance

The sofa bed I've slept on don't have a bar running under the mattress...they're part of the sofa and use the back cushions and sofa frame as support. Personally, I slept on the ones at the Beach Club and Boardwalk and haven't had any back problems due to the bed. However, based on other reports, different folks have had different experiences.

The sofa beds in the living rooms of the DVC villa resorts are not of the genre that you still find in too many hotels where the matress is extremely thin and there are bars poking you in the back. The DVC ones are not as good as a bed but more than adequate without causing discomfort. Be aware that Animal Kingdom Villas, Bay Lake Tower, and Old Key West have both a queen size pull-out sofa and twin size pull out chair in the living room of the 1BR and that twin size is also quite adequate.

The one I slept on @ AKV - Jambo was the pull out kind and had the bar in the middle, by day 3 or so my back was killing me (and I've never had back problems) I switched over to the sleeper chair and it was much better (we were there 9 or 10 nights.) I've since been told that they'll give you a milk crate mattress cover, which supposedly helps.

There are different kinds of sleeper sofas in the DVC villas. So it may depend on which resort you are staying at.

If you are at BWV or BCV, the sleeper sofa there is more like a real mattress. The back flips forward and the cushions stay attached to help support the foot of the bed.

At most of the other resorts, they have a three section pad on a platform. It's not all that thick and it is memory foam. So it can be hard to sleep on.

And you might find a villa here and there with the older kind of sleeper sofa with the bar across the middle of the bed.

The sleeper chair is more comfortable than the three section pad. You'll find these at OKW, AKV and BLT.
