Well, I would like to also chime in on the soda issue - I have an 18 and 16 yr DS - both athletes (hockey, lacrosse, swimming) from an early age - and thier coaches always preaced against large amount of soda consumption, so that helped my parenting one soda a day... then DS found out that Coke (dark sodas) had an ingredient called phosphoric acid that does some leeching of calcium from the bones, and the effects of caffeine on young kids - so he decided to stay away from both - Root Beer doenst have either...

this helps me with the young dd - one a day soda, and she rarely finishes it..

now if I can just stay away from my Dr Pepper addiction!! *grin

I just think any soda for kids is not good for them. Now the over 12 set can have a little but I've seen kids as young as 4 or 5 drinking it and I think the parents are too lazy to give their kids something better for them. I think soad is just as bad as coffee and tea and should really only be for older kids and adults. Kids drink and eat enough crap.

The leaching thing is correct. Back in the early '80s I began having arthritic like symptoms in my joints.(elbows, wrists, knees, etc.). My doctor even put me in the hospital and did tests to find out what it was. It even left me with red streaky spots on my arms.(looked quite nasty). The doctor never found out what it was, but my grandmother, after having traveled with us to WDW, saw how many Cokes I was drinking. A friend of her's had had the same thing, and her doctor told her to lay off of dark colas. After a few months of experimenting on my part, it finally turned out that any of the dark colas, Coke, Dr. Pepper, and Pepsi did it to me. The light drinks didn't, and some root beers didn't. I was glad to find out what it was though. Being in my early 20's at the time, I couldn't imagine why I was falling apart so soon!:)
Of course now after having gastric bypass surgery two years ago, I don't drink ANY of the carbonated drinks.:)

I've cut way back on my soda consumption, only because I was drinking so much diet soda it really made me jumpy...and gassy.

I drink maybe one a day...down from 3-4 a day. I think H2O is still the best. I haven't given my DS 3 soda yet, but i'm sure he'll have some at some point.

Moderation is the key....
