socks for boy scouts?

Hi everyone, I have noticed that there are a lot of scout families here. I bit the bullet last year and bought 8 pair of real BSA socks as my son volunteered for 4 weeks at the camp. He was home each week and we were able to keep track of them. Next summer he will do the same but is also attending the National Jamboree. For the Jamboree they will be on the road 2/3 days on the way there and back so will be gone a total of 14 days. So I need more socks but want to find a cheaper substitute. Any recommendations? Thanks!!

The Air Force now wears olive drab socks the same color as the Boy Scouts (sometimes, DS and I wear each other's socks, by mistake)

Try an Army-Navy Surplus store if you have one. They make cheap cotton socks that are not expesive, or Thorlo makes socks that are exactly the same fluffy ones that Scouts wear.

If he is going to be doing a lot of hiking, you do not want cotton socks. Cotton socks hold in the moisture from your feet sweating and stay wet/damp and will cause major blisters. You need to either get BSA socks or socks specifically made for hiking. They will be made of poly or wool if I remember correctly.

ETA: If he needs to he can wash his socks in the bathroom sink with his soap/body wash and hang them on the clothes hangers he will have to bring.

Before buying a substitute, check with the Jamboree troop scoutmaster about whether substitutes are permitted and for recommendations. You don't want something cheap, as another poster said. Good socks are an important part of a Scout's equipment. We always had about 15 pairs. Don't forget to label them with name and Jambo troop number.
