I need help with my sociology paper. My teacher said for our research paper we could do a survey and put it into sociological perspective. So I ask you to answer these questions. Thanks for helping!
1) Do you think that in America you can really change your status? ie from poverty to wealth or from no one to a Congressman.
I certainly think it is possible. But studies show it is rare so I think it is much more difficult and unlikely than many people think. I think our society encourages the myth that anyone can be anything, but nothing in actual life bears out this myth for more than a small handful of people.
2) As of now have you accomplished more than you thought you would?
I guess so. I've been accepted to a top graduate school program (and done well there) and won a national fellowship to pay for it. I really expect that.
3) Do you think that you have more status than your parents did at your current age?
Yes, in the sense that I have much more education than they do and a higher status occupation. But as of now, have not yet seen a huge difference in income or wealth.
4) Was college the major factor in your ability to move up in status? Well college is one aspect in which I have more status than my parents. They did not go to college and they worked blue and pink collar jobs. I certainly would not be in a PhD program if I hadn't gone to college. And if I hadn't gone to college I assume I would have ended up in similar jobs. I was only able to attend college because of very good scholarships and financial aid.
5) Do you think that you can achieve more in your lifetime than your parents?
I don't know what this means. Can I make more money than them? Yes. Can I have more letters after my name? Yes. But is that really acheiving anything?
Can I have a job that I am happier with than they were? I hope so (because my father has always really despised his job). Can I have a less stressful life because I won't be financially struggling every day? I hope so. Can my children have an easier time because I can take them to the doctor whenever they have symptoms instead of trying to wait it out to avoid the co-pay? I hope so. I don't know if I would see those things as achievements though. I was very lucky to be good at academics and that got me to college. And I was very good at certain subjects there which got me a fellowship and to grad school. It's not like I'm putting out a whole lot of effort there compared to anything my parents ever did.
6) Male or Female?
Female.
7) Age approxiamate?
24
8) What do you consider to be true success?
Having satisfying work. Helping others. Having a loving family and friendship circle.
9) Do you plan on attending college to make the necessary changes to change your life or do you think something else might occur to change it and list what major event you think might make the difference?
No, I'm planning to finish grad school. If grad school didn't work out or if I couldn't get a job or didn't like being a professor, I think I would have to go back to college and learn a new subject to be able to find another career.
10) Finally do you see you kids doing more than you do?
I don't know. I really have no hopes for my kids to be wealthy. I hope they can go to college and I hope they choose satisfying careers. Whether they will have more prestigious jobs or make more money? Who knows?
