Social Security Question - Rumor or Fact

My mom is all upset, she heard people talking about Social Security cutting their monthly check down to just $200 per month. I watch the news daily, and have not heard anything about this. Does anyone here know anything about this?

I wonder if maybe SS is cutting people's checks by $200, like if they got a monthly check of $800, now they will only be getting $600. Could that be it? I can't imagine them only giving people $200/month. Many could not live on that, as SS is their only source of income. Many don't receive pension checks from their jobs.

Or is it just a rumor and social security checks will be left alone?

No this isn't true They will NOT get a cost of living raise this year but they WILL get a 250$ bonus check.

Extactly that.. NO cost of living for 2010 but you will get a $250.00 bonus check..

umm easy there -this is not confirmed-the known facts are that there is no COLA because that is tied to the rate of inflation in housing and couple other areas where there hasnt been any growth. the President has Propossed a one time payment of 250 per benificicary at a cost of 13 billion dollars. Congress will have to approve it.

Well from everything I've seen that 250$ is pretty much "in the mail"

the bill hasn't been passed in congress, so no payments (yet).

True - but I don't see it as being a problem.. Earlier this year it was approved and I was informed via the mail before I even knew it existed..

The ss checks cannot be cut from what I understand.

I heard they were getting "cut" as in "issued" a separate $200/$250 check insated of a COLA increase this year.
