Okay, I work with a girl who INSISTS that her husband applied for an got a social security number for his dog! I called bogus on it and she insists it is true. I even went so far as to ask her if they would be applying for ss benefits when the dogs retires. She STILL thinks it is true. I've been looking on the net all morning and can't find anything that says it is NOT true, but it is probably because it is so ridiculous that no one has to say "hey, dogs can't have social security numbers."

Oh, and the reason their dog could have a number was because it was a registered pedigreed dog.

Someone please direct me somewhere so I can print something for her and put an end to this dog dependent madness.

Oh, and if it IS true...I want to know how to get numbers for my two mutts. I can't believe we've been missing out on claiming them as dependents for the last 10 years! :rotfl:

Have her call the local Social Security office and have her put it on speaker phone:rotfl2: . That is crazy!!!!!! If it were true I would be claiming my 2 dogs as dependants. Does he tell her he is Superman too? The onlly number I can think the dog would have would be a dog license and/ or rabies certificate number.

They got a social security number since it sounded like a "normal" name and so they could write it off on their taxes.

False Statements on Claims

When applying for Social Security Benefits, individuals state that all information they provide on the forms is true and correct to the best of their knowledge. If a person reports something they know is not true, it may be a crime. For example:

* An individual indicates on their application that they are not married when in fact they are married or living as such.
* An applicant claims to be blind and unable to drive a motor vehicle when in fact the individual possesses a valid drivers license and is observed driving.
* A person indicates they do not have any income, when in fact they make money from an outside source such as rental income or an insurance policy.

I remember some guy a few years back who got a social security number for his pig -- yep, his pig! :lmao: He wanted to show the government how easy it was to get a social security number and to show flaws in the system. From what I remember, he wound up in some trouble.

Anyone who claims a pet after getting a social security number for it would definitely be tapping into the waters of fraud. ::yes::

Oh wow. The tennis coach at my high school claimed a couple of extra four-legged 'children' on his taxes. He was found out, got in trouble and his two-legged kids got razzed about it mercilessly at school.

That is crazy that she would even think that is true. The things people believe. :rotfl: :rotfl:

Wow. I think the gene pool needs a lot more chlorine!! :rotfl2:

Since it's a pedigree, could she actually be thinking it's registered with the AKC?? Maybe they assign a number to each registered animal?

See - I think thats what bothers me more then whether or not he did it.

If my husband said "Guess what? I got a SS# for Charley!!"

I do one of these:

And say - yeah, sure you did, pal.

I had a co-worker who also believed everything her husband said. I couldnt figure out if they were both nut jobs, and her husband believed what he said to be true, too. OR if he would tell her things and then laugh his butt off when she turned her back. :confused3 :confused3 I know I would.

Why do you think my pets are named Sara and Hal? ;)

(In case that wink wasn't strong enough - no, we don't have SS#s for our pets but they do have people names.)

My dog is named Murphy. My dog that passed was named Cody. I could get away with it as well. :lmao:

And no... I wouldn't do it!

Wow. I think the gene pool needs a lot more chlorine!!
And lets hope this dog remains their only "baby". :lmao:

With some of the crazy names parents are naming their children lately, you could still give your dog a "dog name" and apply for a SS# :rotfl2:

When you register your dog with the AKC, they receive a registration number, but it is no way a social security number.

What an idiot!

We always give our cats "human" names. One year when we were doing taxes, the older cat's medical expenses were more than ours! Many times I have said that if I could only get SS numbers for those two and claim them as dependants, we'd be sitting pretty and MAYBE come close to breaking even some years on their expenses. :rotfl2:

But yes.....it's fraud. Truth be told, some of us do treat our pets better than a lot of people treat their kids.....Sadly, the IRS doesn't take that into consideration. :lmao:

I have some ocean front property for sale here in Arkansas. Close to Eureka Springs and Branson, MO. Do you mind asking her if she would be interested. I would be willing to make her a great deal!
