I filled out SSA from 1724 on 9/30. It's a form you fill out to request any social security or medicare refund that was due to your deceased loved one. My dad passed on 9/10 and is owed one social security check, since he lived the entire month of August. If you have completed this form, how long did it take to hear something? I have a sibling that needs assistance and these funds would help a great deal. Thank you.

did your dad not receive a direct deposit in September? if not and you are eligible to be the recipient it looks like (from a quick Google search) that people are experiencing up to 120 days wait time :(

He did not receive his direct deposit in September. He passed on 9/10 and was supposed to get his deposit on 9/18. It was stopped before it could be deposited. Looks like I will prepare to wait. They told me 60 days when I filed the form so I was just beginning to get curious. Thank you for your response.

When one of my parents passed away a few years ago, I called SS to let them know. They were on direct deposit so there wasn't any form I needed to fill out. Maybe something has changed recently, but I seem to recall they automatically handled everything without any other forms or information needed.

My sister handled that but my mom died Sept 2018 and we received her last benefit April 2019.

Same with my husbands when he passed. The funeral home notified SS and they took care of everything from there. I didn't have to fill out any forms or do anything else.

But was that just to notify them of the passing or to submit for the last check they were owed?

When Marie's uncle passed 2 years ago, whom we were caregivers for and she is power of attorney, we did have to file for his last SS month to be paid to the estate. We waited several months, noting on its own. We completed and sent in the form, a few more months for payment.

Yes, we found ours did the same thing. I would imagine that some people try to fraudulently keep collecting from SS even after the person is deceased. I called SS and they were very helpful even if they had already been informed by the funeral home. There were no other forms for us to submit. The direct deposit of the monthly SS check ceased.

Sorry to hear about your dad. I went through something similar when my mom passed, and it took about 6 to 8 weeks to hear back after submitting the form. It can definitely feel like a long wait, but the refund did eventually come through. If you haven’t already, make sure to check your mail too, as they might send updates or requests for more info by post. Hopefully, it comes through quickly for you and your sibling.

This is interesting to me since it's not what happened to us. A couple of days after my mother passed, her bank called me, first to give their condolences. When I asked how they'd known so quickly, they said that the social security administration had notified them! I'd never thought to contact Social Security, but maybe the hospital where she'd died did(?) And since she died on the last day of the month, I just assumed that no more money was due. The bank contacted her lawyer and sent the money to my bank since my mother's bank had no branches within 2 thousand miles of me. I guess I should consider myself fortunate that it was all so easy.

Nothing yet, and it’s been almost seven months. When I was actually able to get through to Social Security, they said they were working on it. Ridiculous.

They probably are:
1. Understaffed
2. Hampered by outdated equipment
3. Hampered by ever changing legislation
4. Worn down to a nub by hearing stories of heartbreak and loss on a regular basis
5. Distracted by receiving emails from opm that look like spam
6. Distracted by RIF rumors
7. Frustrated that they have to spend time replying to weirdo emails when they’d rather spend time on the mountains of work
8. Not throwing their boss under the bus, because their boss is also distracted by the chaos.

Being “efficient with taxpayer dollars” means being chronically understaffed. People try, but resilience takes a hit when chaos and threats and fear take center stage. Hopefully they get to your case soon.

I’m sure but my dad’s passing occurred long before the current issues. They know so quickly when someone dies. He was due a social security check 8 days after he died (for the previous month since he lived the entire month.) and they pulled it in that short time frame. They know. They know almost immediately when someone dies. They know who they are, who their children are, if they pay taxes, etc. There is really no excuse for it to take seven months, even with the current circus.

I sympathize with the hard working people at the social security office. Almost everyone I spoke with was helpful, efficient, friendly, and sounded very dedicated.

I’m sorry for your loss. And appreciate that you know the employees are working hard. I have no idea of the process. I also don’t know how many people are assigned to that particular task. For all we know, it’s 1 person that needs to process thousands of different requests.

A reply to your 1st post said people were experiencing 120 day delays. Nothing that has happened since December is helping that situation at all. It’s even possible the department that processes these things has been decimated by cuts since January. Making the delays even worse.

Maybe contact your congress person? Maybe they can look into the situation & get some answers for you. If nothing else, they need to know how their constituents are being effected.

I'm surprised you got through on the phone. My dad passed away last month and I tried calling them multiple times a day for multiple days, waiting on hold for extended periods of time, but no one ever answered. The funeral home had told me they would notify SS but I would have to contact them about the $255 one-time payment. It turns out SS deposited that $255 in my mom's account without me calling them. The deposit amount to my mom hasn't been corrected yet, but I know that can take a few months. She did receive a letter notifying her that they are making the correct changes to remove her SS and give her my dad's since his was the higher amount.

I was usually able to get through until about a months ago. I always utilized the call back feature.
He is also due a Medicare premium refund that would be part of the check but I doubt I will ever see it. He never received the $255 but my mom is deceased so not sure what’s going on there.

I submitted a from for VA reimbursement of funeral expenses and had the check in 11 days. 11 days.

Received my share this morning in my bank. Not sure if this is a result of me contacting my Congressperson or not. The Medicare premium refund was not part of it, but I’ll take the win where I can get it.
