Soarin'

Yes they both used film which was the reason it was in need of an update. They could have just fixed up the fil but I guess they wanted to switch up the movie too.

Drat. I was of the mindset of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" and I LOVED the Soarin' I experienced last time I was in The Land!

What I don't like about the new one (besides the distortions), is it's just a bunch of random shots around the world. No sequence to them - you're flying through a cloud BOOM you're flying over the Matterhorn for a few seconds and back into the cloud, then you fly over the edge of glacier back into the cloud (again it only lasts a few seconds), followed by a castle in Europe, Sydney Harbor, Africa, China, Egypt, then you're in India for a quick (5 seconds maybe) swoop over the Taj Mahal, down to South America, then off to Paris.

And each sequence is basically: fly toward impressive view, up and over, then into the cloud.

If the trip around the world was logically put together, I might like it more.
I don't remember the original having any kind of "flow", just random shots around California.

Was just going through the motions on YouTube and it appears that the ride has been updated? Say it ain't so! If the answer is a yes and I've identified the new one, I'm left feeling a little deflated :(
....it's so. ::yes::

Well, it kinda went North to South, starting in San Francisco (the Golden Gate) then Humboldt County, Napa Valley, Monterey, Lake Tahoe, Yosemite, Palm Springs, then it swung over to the coast, Camarillo, San Diego, Malibu, Los Angeles, ending in Anaheim. And the segments seemed longer.

It's been Soarin' Around the World for over a year now.
I used to think Soarin' Over California was just ok.
I absolutely adore this new version!!!
The scents are amazing.
And I love that you end up in "your park".
h

ITA, we liked it way more than the CA version, that might be an east coast thing.

I loved the original Soarin' but the new one has better picture quality.

On the old one, it was noticeable.

That was the whole point - going from film (easily damaged) to digital. But Disney took the opportunity to make a different show. And the show itself is getting less than great reviews from many.

It should be about the same since it was a 70mm IMAX horizontal film print. Well - theoretically with twice the vertical resolution compared to the 4K digital projector that's used now. Of course you get film grain and the inherent noise from transferring the image from the original negative to the final print. It's not a wide distribution film, so I don't think they would be making a whole lot of prints.

The biggest problem with film in a setting like Disney would have is how long each print is used before it's replaced. I remember watching movies on the first day where the print was pristine. Maybe I'd see a movie after a month or even late first run (where the film had moved to another theater) and there were noticeable scratches. I'd seen movies in a revival house using old prints, and they were in bad shape. One of the worst was when I was in college and we had a showing of the entire Indiana Jones (at the time) trilogy. Raiders of the Lost Ark was extremely scratched, and almost the entire rolling boulder scene was missing. I've heard that some projectionists snipped out their favorite scenes as souvenirs.

Really?

I haven't come across anyone who didn't like the new one.

Having watched both films on YouTube, I have to say I really prefer the original. I just feel that the new one is too PC?

We saw the new one last month. We enjoyed it but my issues with it was like a PP said, it would have been better to have gone around the world in order. It was too hodge podged together.

The issue is massive distortion unless you're dead center.
My memory of the new version is an extremely curved Eiffel Tower. I can't believe the people ar Disney thought a film with that much distortion would ever be OK. Maybe the decision makers only sat in the center seats forgetting that more of the audience would be sitting to the sides.

Well - when we managed to see it we ended up in the upper left corner, and that was pretty curved. Of course it started off with the Matterhorn (which looks nothing like at Disneyland) which looked really odd with that much curvature.

Soarin' over California used to be one of my favorite rides and my husband's absolute favorite, I don't even care if I ride the new one again that's how much I dislike it. My husband still enjoys the new one for the ride mechanics, but doesn't like the movie or the scents, huge disappointment for us, and we have ridden it 4+ times from all different vantage points. I really wish they had kept the original in DCA at least.
