Soarin @ WDW picture quality

Most amazing view is from behind the screen. I am trying to remember where I heard it but the new film will be 3D, Digital and will require a massive tech change-out. The screen is actually an Imax screen turned on its side, 90 degrees. I'm not sure what I am going to do when Michael Eisner is not hitting that Mickey Golf Ball at me on the screen.

supposedly it's supposed to be 4k resolution too so thats really good considering that is just coming out now.

If they change the video, I'll be bummed.

If they make it 3D, that will make it unridable for motion-sick prone me.

I'm ok with updating the movie itself to something digital, but I wish it would just be left the same.

Yeah I am not a big fan of the 3D idea. I would like to see this current version updated to digital but I would also be alright if they added additional flights to different destinations. It could operate like Star Tours and could be totally random. This of course would mean that the intro video would need redone along with various signage etc.

the funny thing is Disneyland does not see the wait times that WDW sees for this attraction though. It's regularly over an hour wait time for it at WDW but it's regularly under an hour even 30 minutes and less at Disneyland. Thats a lot of their attractions and they do see a few million less than Epcot but it's still not a craze like it is in WDW. The big one I notice a huge difference is toy story mania they never have the long wait times for that attraction like DHS has.

I wonder if it has anything to do with it being the only kid friendly ride at the park. Anybody can ride Great Movie Ride and Backlot Tour but one seems to boring and the other is scary for younger kids. Or the ride is just popular lol.

Maybe that's because there is so much to do in the California parks when compared to Epcot and DHS? Interesting that the lines are so much shorter.

I would like to see a Soarin' over the US version. California is a great state but why stay limited to only it?

I know that they are filming over Disneyland today for the new film. I haven't heard anything on what will all be the new film or if a lot of it has changed. And regarding 3D this thread is the first I've actually heard of them making it 3D. I have heard consistently that they are going to 4K projectors tho. And inside the magic said they were filming over Disneyland today. I do agree in the fact that some things should change and they should do a fly over of WDW for that version instead of DLR. And I agree that there is more attractions in both DLR parks than in one in WDW. TSMM and soarin are in the same park in DLR where WDW has them in two different parks.

although i'd been to WDW before i'd never attended Soarin' until my most recent visit. I really liked it but I completely agree that it needs some work. I almost found it inexcusable that they'd have a screen that looks run-down for one of their main epcot attractions.

i probably wouldn't go through the trouble of riding it again unless they clean up the presentation. doesn't seem like a very big job to me, at least as far as getting a nice new screen for it. even if they didn't film any new material and just cleaned up the look of it i'd ride it again.

This ride would be awesome with a HUGE HD screen. I don't know if they even make an HD screen that big. But I assume stadiums and stuff have them. It just wouldn't be cost effective. But it sure would be cool.

if they get 4K projectors it will be just as good or better

4k would be an interesting idea. This technology is still pretty new yes? I think Disney should be on that cutting edge so I am all for this.

yes 4k TVs are just coming out and they are very expensive most of them are above $3,000. I would assume the large projectors that Disney would use for soarin would cost a pretty penny.

Pretty sure they could afford to buy every 4K projector in the world many times over :rotfl:

I've heard that (as usual) WDW cheapened out when they put the Soarin' projections in Epcot and didn't put them in a dust-free environment like in DCA, or something to that effect.

the funny thing is Disneyland does not see the wait times that WDW sees for this attraction though.

As others have mentioned DCA has quite a few more rides than Epcot or HS so the crowds are dispersed over 6 or 7 e-tickets rather than waiting for one of the 3 or 4 e-tickets in Ep or HS.

I don't know about dust free rooms but the WDW print is in much better shape than the DCA print, the rights side in DCA is almost unwatchable with all the dirt and defects.

I read on another site that the Soarin refurb at DCA is being delayed because the new projectors weren't working out as they hoped. Here's the rumor:

"Unfortunately, there are issues with the new 4K projectors that have the IMAX folks and WDI at odds. Basically, the 4K IMAX projectors don’t quite work with Soarin’s screen size. There’s a lower scale HD projector that IMAX is offering in place of the 4K version, but WDI is firm on what then want and will wait for the 4K projectors to be ready. As frustrating as that is for everyone, it is probably the best thing for the long term operation of this attraction."

The new 4K projectors will actually have a much lower resolution than the existing 70mm Imax projectors but they'll be much easier to maintain since the picture won't deteriorate and get "dirty" like the existing film does.

I understand I also think that has to do with DLR only having two parks and WDW having 4 it's more spread out at WDW than DLR.

pretty sure they could buy pretty much anything they want. Or make it themselves like walt always did. What they can do and what they will do are two different things tho. We will just have to wait and see at least they are getting a new film.

You think that Soarin' being one of their most popular rides that they would do well with upkeep.

yes but you don't see soarin go down for refurbs very long because its so popular. They will see how it goes in DCA before they bring it here. DCA's is older than ours.

Until seeing some of these comments I'd never realized how little time, money and energy it would take to update a ride as simple as soarin. The laugh those execs have everyday as they swim in money must be rib breaking.
