Soarin' Film

I heard a little while back that Disney was having a new film made for the Soarin' attraction at the Magic Kingdom that would be more fitting for Epcot instead of California Adventure; something that featured a flyover of the countries of the World Showcase or something...ending up at Illuminations. Has anyone else heard this and if so, does anyone know what the status is?

This rumor was on this board a while back and it seems pretty unlikely that it will happen. It doesn't make any sense for Disney to change the film right now because of the economy and quite frankly, the ride is already wildly popular as it is.

I agree with the fact that the ride is wildly popular. When we were there last month, there was a 20 minute wait at rope drop to get a FastPass! And, to top the film that is already there would be hard, especially considering that you would have to do a flyover of 12 countries in about 5 minutes...I was just wondering. Thanks!

Yeah, it seems unlikely that they're going to make a new movie for it at the moment. Maybe during the 40th anniversay or WDW or in 2012 it will be the 20th anniversary of Epcot. Just guesses.

The issue is why spend the money to make a new film when the attraction is currently the most popular at Epcot. A new film is unlikely to make it more popular. Thus, a new film for the moment is a "waste of money"

Yeah... what everyone else is sayin... besides... then they'd have to replace the bugs and pieces of hair and such that pop up...:rotfl2:
Unless they've done something since I was last there, they do need to clean up the film a little. It's starting to show it's age already. Also last time we rode it the smells were weaker than normal.

We noticed that back in 2007. When we were there in January '09 it was even worse. The film really does need to be cleaned up a bit.

I wish they would change it... I am in Florida, not California... I want to see Florida things... just my opinion... (but I still love it!!)

There is a plan to put a new Soarin' film in California Adventure called Soarin' Over the World in 2013, as part of that park's expansion. It seems likely that they would bring that to Epcot too, unless it was a cost issue.

Exactly. Fast Passes are usually gone before noon.

gigasteve,

What is the basis for your statement?

There were rumors about "Soarin' Over the World" that pre-date the construction of "Soarin'" at Epcot. However, Epcot has the same film as in California.

The announced plans for California Adventure do not include a replacement for "Soarin' Over California."

Epcot opened in 1982... that would be the 30th Anniversary. I'll be curious to see if the 40th gets any big play... I don't remember much from the 35th anniversary.

As long as they don't do that hideous cake again or the stupid sign on Spaceship Earth...

Of course Disney isn't that dumb... I mean next we'll hear they'll build a Giant Hat in the middle of a park that doesn't have a ride or attraction in it... oh wait.

I though they had filmed scenes for it already. That is what they told marketing cast last year. There were flyovers of MK for a few days while they were filming the last scene. There is also another theater ready to go-right?

Whether or not it is popular or cost prohibitive, we were sold a bill of goods during construction, that the film would be changed to scenery from Florida. Otherwise, it's just another cheap ride copy from another park Disney has been known for recently.

Also, why are we still using film for anything? With HD digital projectors, Disney could really be innovative on something the way they used to be. I thought that is what Future World was all about, showcasing technology of the 'future'. Frankly, I've seen film on round screens for 30 years. Other than the ride mechanism, Soarin' really is nothing new. The breezes and scents have been around for years, other parks just call it '4D'.

It is one of my favorites, but Disney could do better.

well I'll say one thing, I went on it today and it seems the dust keeps getting worse(as one would expect)

At the very least they need to close it to clean teh darn screen!

Well, they still have to actually FILM the footage which has a cost to it...

The delivery mechanism could be changed but again, we are talking a cost to it...

If they aren't going to go digital, they SHOULD do a new print at the very least every so often. Just one of the many things that gets skimped on that would never have even 10 years ago. I often wonder if the gold paint on the Carosel is still 24K gold paint anymore?

Long story short, I wouldn't hold my breath on anything until the economy improves.

The way Disney has been doing things lately, you may have to hold your breath longer than that!
