I agree. It's a hike to get to the fp machines, so sometimes getting fp and then hiking back to something else wastes more time than just waiting in line. Plus that park is so spread out - half the time I never go back to use my soarin fp - just not worth the effort.
This is what we do. We go to EPCOT 30 minutes before opening. When the rope drops my husband goes to Soaring to take the fastpass while my daughter and I take out time walking there. We always stop my Stich and usually are the first ones to take the picture with him. Then we walk to the Land pavilion. Have breakfast there and by the time we finished breakfast our fastpass are ready to use. We love Soarin and that is the only way we do it. Usually the FP had ran out by noon or 1:00 pm
I think the lines have definitely gotten shorter. On my first trip when Soarin' was there the line never went below 80-90 minutes (in the off season). Now it seems to be closer to 30-40 minutes on average according to Lines app.
I usually get a FP, and then get on line so I can ride it twice. I LOVE Soarin'. The music brings tears to my eyes. I'm such a baby with it. I don't know why, but it is so emotional for me. I LOVE it. One of the VERY few rides I WOULD wait 90+ min in line for.
When we went in September, we saw the lines according to the posted times hit 90 minutes more than once, and I want to say FP's were long gone as early as 12 or 1, but on a couple other days they were around until about 3. Test Track and Soarin FP's always went fast.
