Will motion sickness be a problem on the new ride Soarin? I tend to get a headache and some motion sickness when I visit our Imax theater and I am wondering if Soarin might do the same thing to me?

Well, at first I was going to say that most people (even those with minor motion sickness) seem to do just fine with Soarin' because it's so gentle (unlike, say, Star Tours).

However, if a regular IMAX is too much for you, then I wouldn't try Soarin'. I hate to say that, but it's a ride that is a huge IMAX screen that they suspend you over on moving benches. It's a very gentle ride - but if a watching IMAX still bothers you, I'd imagine moving seats watching the same thing would be even more of a problem.

:( Wish I had better news!

N.E.D.

I have trouble with IMAX too, but I'm going to try Soarin this weekend for AP preview. I'll let you know how I make out.

I have a little trouble with IMAX films. I have not yet done MS and I hate Star Tours.....yikes......but I will try Soarin' but I would like your opinion once you have been on the ride.

Thanks

I have mild motion sickness and I got a little sick on Soarin. I don't want to go on it again, but I think you should at least try it. Star Tours doesn't get me sick. I don't like heights I think that was my main problem.

I am one that gets motion sickness.... I can't even ride in the back seat of a car BUT Soarin is the best ride I have ever ridden. IT is a MUST do ride. I think you should try it b/c in the worst case you can always close your eyes. I rode about 10 times at DCA in CA and I would say maybe 3 of those times i started to get a little dizzy as we started to fly over the bridge.... I closed my eyes... but only for a moment...you don't want to miss what follows... I open them again and I was fine. This is my favorite ride of any anywhere!! Do try it!!
It was similar to moments I get in Ellen's Energy show at Epcot....when you're in the helicoptor and things come fast at you.... I just close my eyes momentarily and I'm fine.
I hope this helps and you try it!! Good luck

I suggest dramamine, I am going to take it before I go on Mission Space and if I get the chance to do Soarin (crossed fingers) I'll take it for that too.

i spoke to a cm yesterday that went on soarin and said if you are prone to motion sickness then you will get it on this ride!

I did Soarin during the CM previews and I usually am VERY prone to motion sickness - but not on this ride. If you ask to sit on one of the ends in the 3rd row (the lowest once 'flying'), you can still see the edges of the walls and are not fully immersed in the screen. It worked great for me - any time I got a little iffy, I would just look at the wall. :)

I've been debating about this myself- if I should try it. I got VERY ill on Body Wars. It got the point closing my eyes didn't matter. Back seats in moving cars does the same thing. I get queasy if I don't close my eyes during the magic carpet scene of Philharmgic.

Boy, I just don't know what to do about this ride! I don't usually get motion sickness, but one time on a simulator ride in Las Vegas at Caesar's Palace, I got so sick I had to go back to the room and lay down for an hour and even after that felt queasy for the rest of the day. It was a very jerky ride and as much as I want to do Soarin', I don't want it to ruin my day at Disney.

Up until this thread I was going to try it though, because everyone said it was just fine, but then I read this.......

i spoke to a cm yesterday that went on soarin and said if you are prone to motion sickness then you will get it on this ride!

and now I don't know what to do. I'm not afraid of heights or anything, I'm just afraid of having the same experience as Las Vegas.

I am prone to motion sickness big time and I usually get sick on these kinds of rides (Star Wars, Body Wars etc), I am talking the cold sweats, head ache, sick to my stomach, the whole nine. But I just recently did Soarin in CA and it was really awesome. I definitely took some Bonine (Dramamine, whatever) before and some tylenol to ward off any head aches, but I wouldn't of have wanted to miss out on this ride. You have to know your own limits. I knew to never try Mission Space ( and I never will!) but I decided to give this one a shot and I was safe.
Good luck if you decide to try and have fun!

When I rode it last weekend with a CM friend of mine, there was a lady in the next car that was screaming and laughing the whole time...it cracked me up! :rotfl:

I get motion sickness very easily. No teacups or spinners, including the carousel. I love Star Tours but get very sick on it. Only did Body Wars once. Watching some movies make me a bit sick more so on circlevision movies. I even got nauseated on a teeter totter with my great nephew!!!
I have ridden Soarin at DCA many times. There are a couple of spots that do cause troble but the film is onlu 4 minutes long.
SPOILERS:
The first problem spot is when the hang glider swings around in Yosemite. It is very short and I usually keep my eyes open for that. The second spot is near the end when you are flying over the ships in San Diego. It is a great shot and then there are a couple of nauseating moves. Just close your eyes for about 7 seconds when you see the ships. There is then a shot of Down Town LA at night that isn't necissarily sickening but it is sped up and makes me feel wierd. Don't miss the end though!
For those who get motion sick I would give this a try. It is nothing like Star Tours or spinners and there is less problem than in any of the circlevision films.

I totally agree. I rode Body Wars once and never again...I got sick.... But there is a lot less motion in Soarin so that closing yours eyes can actually help if you need to. On Body Wars...if I remember correctly ..... closing yours didn't work b/c your seat still moved so much!!

DO NOT MISS THIS RIDE!! :goodvibes

I just rode Soarin' last week and I was fine. I had SEVERE motion sickness that lasted 5+ hrs when I rode Mission Space, and I'm the type that gets sick in the backseat of big cars, on boats, etc (though I seem to do fine and/or recover quickly from Thunder Mountain, etc). At any rate, for the very first few seconds of Soarin (you sort of swing to the side over the Golden Gate bridge) I thought I might get sick . . . but the rest of the trip was fine.

Also, keep in mind that you can close your eyes if you start to get sick and you'll be fine. The movements of the "hangliders" are not jerky at all. On Mission Space, on the other hand, you are definitely MOVING and closing your eyes will not save you!

HTH

I can't imagine getting motion sickness on this ride! It's very gentle and relaxing. I absolutely loved it! My husband can't sit backwards or in the backseat of a car, and he loved it too. It's nothing like Body Wars or Star Tours. It's like flying through the air. It's awesome!

Thanks for the post and would love to hear more comments from people who try this out soon.

I've done Body Wars & got pretty sick, never tried Star Tours because I figured it would be the same.

Last Jan I did ride MS and did not enjoy it at all. I made sure not eat much before (light breakfast) but my suggestion to someone trying it out would be to go later in the day (if you don't have lots of evening plans) as I felt "out of it" the rest of the day.

Thanks for your thoughts everyone. Its probably one of those rides that I'll have to try once because it sounds so neat.
