So You Want To Move To Florida? Conclusion: Post 22

Loving this report! Makes me think of our stress and efforts in our move, too, and it gives me hope that soon we'll be moving again but into our own home and we'll get settled!

Did your realtor act as a buyers agent for you or did you only look at her properties? We want a realtor who can help us select an area as well as a home. Can you pm me your realtor's name?

Keep these reports coming and love the kitties!!

Now just some random thoughts and facts.

I miss the songbirds that we had up in New England but we have a wide variety of shore and predatory birds here that I never saw up north including Bald Eagles. Summer was very hot but it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be and this past summer was one of the hottest ones on record. I love the fact that it’s now mid November and I’m still wearing shorts and I just planted my tomatoes. I have an orange tree in my backyard!

Food in general seems to be cheaper here. The price of produce is amazing at times like lettuce for 70 cents and bananas for 19 cents a pound. Meat, on the other hand, seems to cost more and there are less sales. While there are no state taxes, there are lots of other taxes that really mount up.

We air condition a standard 1400 square foot house and it appears that our electric bill will average out around $100 a month. The highest we paid was in August at around $220. In the winter it should drop to about $60. Besides heat and a/c, the hot water and stove are also electric. Our water bill is about $12 a month. Cable, and that includes high speed internet, runs just over $100 a month. I have Vonage for my house phone, $25, and Verizon for my cell. Our taxes on the house have gone up a bit from last year and will be around $1300. That includes trash pickup.

Speaking of trash, we get a pick up twice a week. Then on Wednesday they come around and get yard waste. Up in Massachusetts we had to cut and wrap branches. If they weren’t tied up properly and just the right size, they wouldn’t take them. Down here you just leave the stuff out by the street. We can still use plastic trash bags (we had to buy special ones back in MA) and you can put out as much as you want to.

We have in the lawn sprinklers. We don’t use them very much but sometimes they’re just fun to play with.

I like most of the wildlife here. The lizards are adorable and the sticky frogs that attached themselves to our windows this summer amused both us and the cats. I don’t care for the millions of microscopic ants that live everywhere but at least I’ve yet to see a fire ant. And I absolutely detest palmetto bugs and their smaller generic brown roach cousins. I’ve only seen one snake around our house. Not a big deal as snakes don’t bother me. My DH saw a rattlesnake at one of the state parks though and that would bother me.

The hurricane season this year was a record setter. Lucky for this part of Florida, the only one that was an issue was Wilma. She brought us copious amounts of rain and some wind but when it was over, we hadn’t even lost our electricity. The worry is the price any of us that live here pay for paradise.

I thought I would miss the changing seasons but so far I haven’t. Maybe I will sometime in the future but now, when I see the temps in Massachusetts falling lower and lower, it makes me laugh. While one autumn out of 5 might knock your eyeballs out, most were a one or two day event and then a good size Nor'easter would come along and blow all the leave away. Winter was always a pain and I mean that literally. With arthritis and other back related problems, I always knew 36 to 48 hours before a storm was coming. This was not a good type of knowledge to have.

Driving around down here took some getting use to. First thing that I noticed was that nearly all the traffic lights are overhead. That’s an uncommon thing to see in Massachusetts. Then there’s those center turn lanes on main roads and that’s something we almost never see in Massachusetts. On average, in town, people seem to drive slower but put them on a major highway and be prepared to go to light speed! Even my back route to Disney can turn into the Indy 500. One time, when I was cruising along at 65 mph, I got passed by a car like I was in park. That car was towing a BOAT!

The roads are well kept though and usually very straight. That may be part of the reason cars go so fast. Even I have been amazed to look down at the speedometer and see that I’m edging towards 70 mph. You just don’t feel like you’re going as fast as you are. Our town does have something that reminds me of up north ... a Rotary! That may be because it was named after Auburndale, MA.

On average I feel much better down here. Those of you in New England and elsewhere, I suppose, will understand how the endless gray skies of winter tend to become depressing. Here winter is magnificent. We did have a few cool days, even one day when the morning low was 19 degrees. But for the most part, from November through the beginning of April, the days are sunny, warm and dry. Six months of awesome weather, 3 months of transitioning weather and 3 months of HOT.

There are two hospitals in our area, one in Winter Haven and a much larger one in Lakeland. There is also a goodly supply of doctors.

Our small town must have at least 50 churches. 99% of them are of some Protestant denomination. I have only seen one Catholic church (in Winter Haven) and 1 Jewish Temple.

In the summer, mowing the lawn is done at least once every 5 days and sometimes more!

The following stores are a reasonably short drive from where I live:
Wal-Mart
Winn Dixie - Food
Publix - Food
Home Depot
Lowes
CVS
Walgreens
Just about every fast food restaurant you can think of.
K Mart
Radio Shack

These stores are a 30 minute drive or longer.
J C Penny
Office Max
Sears
And probably a lot of other stores. They're at a mall in Lakeland that I’ve only been to once.

Things that are farther out.
ARGGG! Dunkin Donuts!
Downtown Disney.

Another thing I’m still not use to is the laid back way they mark the borders of the towns down here. In Massachusetts you always know exactly where you are because the signs tell you. Down here there are large land areas where you don’t have a clue. I live in the land mass that is Auburndale but not in the town. It’s very confusing.

Even with us now being back to standard time, we do not have full darkness until about 5:30 p.m. That’s about an extra hour of light because I’m further west than I was in Massachusetts.

I love to take photographs and up in New England my passion was song birds. Because they are at a premium here, I’ve switched to photographing clouds, weather related events and the abundant Florida wildlife. There’s almost always something going on in that department.

Here are my five favorite photos that I’ve taken in the past year.

Sandhill Crane

One of the Hot air balloons that appeared over my house on August 17th.

108167281.jpg

Roll Cloud. These appear as a thunderstorm approaches and look like a horizontal tornado although they contain no tornadic activity. I had never seen these clouds before moving down here.

107485737.jpg

Probably the best sunset of the year. Taken from my backyard.

Almost a tornado! Luckily this cloud only held together for about 30 seconds. I think, at the time, I was more fascinated than scared.

And, in keeping with the Disney theme, here are my five favorite Disney photos from this year.

The perfect sky for a photo of the ToT.

103270477.jpg

Fireworks over Seven Seas Lagoon on the 4th of July.

My first AP sneak preview of an attraction... SOARIN!

76366321.jpg

My favorite place in my favorite park.

And one photo from Cypress Gardens just because it’s such a pretty place.

So that’s my story. If you have any questions on something I didn’t mention, feel free to ask away.

Do I ever feel homesick? Yes I do. Sometimes I just long to see places I always knew. It’s like a deep ache. But then it passes and I’m happy to be here. Perhaps next Spring I’ll go back up to Massachusetts for a visit but I’m now sure that I was meant to live in Florida and it will remain my home.

Virgo10, thank you for sharing your experience. Maybe after a year, I will do the same. I found alot of similarities in your posts as to what I have experienced so far. There are days when I want to be back in Seattle so bad I want to cry, yet it doesn't mean I want to move back there. I miss my mom so much and I don't know when I will have the money to go back and visit (I would need to bring the kids and frankly, flying that far alone with a 2 y.o. scares me) so that is probably the hardest on me personally, that and missing my friends. I have not made any new ones here, not locally anyway. But I love the weather, and like you I see the temperatures dropping in my old city and think how glad I am I don't have to deal with it. Its been 8 months since I have put on a coat and I love it! And per my post a last week, I am now doing at least one of the things I wanted to move here for which is going to Disney and going often.

Thank you for sharing your pics too. They were really nice.

I enjoyed your reports, thanks for writing them. And I loved your pics, espcially the crane.

Just one question- Can I come live with you?? My family isn't interested, but I sure as heck am!! :goodvibes

You are doing amazingly well on your utility bills. The cheapest electric bill we have ever had was $160 and the highest $225. Our water is about $60 in the months we don't water. The only place I have seen produce prices that low are the roadside stands. Meat, milk and bread seem to be much higher than up north. One thing that was funny - I decided to make soup and went looking for beef with marrow bones. Both Publix and Albertsons told me that they simply don't carry meat with bones - ever. SuperWalmart does however. Being from New Hampshire I hate to pay sales tax - just found out they tax chocolate - if that's not a food group I don't know what is!!! My nurse daughter does not like Winter Haven Hospital although I had a pretty good experience there. She does like, and so do we,, Lakeland Hospital.

It's hard to find doctors - most of them seem to have degrees from foreign schools.

Our property taxes are quite a bit higher than yours - although I think you paid a little more for your house than we did. When we moved in there was a pine forest on one side of the road and an orange grove on the other. Both have been COMPLETELY destroyed for new housing. I have yet to see a palmetto bug, but I have stepped in lots and lots of fire ants. Walmart has a lotion that really does get rid of the sting. Getting rid of the blisters and scars takes a whole lot longer.

I must agree that you have done amazingly well on your utility bills. Our lowest electric bill last winter was $90 something when we had neither the air or heat on and the highest was September at $258. Our water bill is always around $55 a month and we don't water the lawn much. I've never seen bananas for .19 cents/lb anywhere around here. They are .49 cent/lb at Publix and .45 cents/lb at the roadside stand near me. I need to move by you!

Actually, I am in the minority among those who move to Florida. This may be because it was not my choice to come here. I miss the change of seasons, the snow, the cooler weather. I miss the innocence of not being afraid of the weather! I do love WDW and being a two hour drive from there makes me happy, but all in all I would still like to be able to move back "home" someday.

I do love your photos -- great job! That is a beautiful sunset.

Your cats are beautiful. I have three of my own. Spooky looks like my Bambi. the calico one looks like my Jasmine. We have a very large "pissy" looking one who actually is very sweet (she's black like Bambi/Spooky) named Missy.

Your report is great so far. Keep it up.

Would love to move to Florida myself, but DH isn't crazy about the idea. He loves the snow, cold so on. I have relatives in Orlando. I told him when I hit retirement age with or without him I'm out of here. :sunny:

Thanks for the great report ! My best friend just moved from here in western Ma. to Auburndale, and I miss her like crazy. When I talk to her she tells me about all the great fruits and vegetables available compared to up here. I'm married to a die hard New Englander, so my dream of moving to Florida is just that, a dream :( . Will you update us with some more great pictures? They would sure cheer up a lot of people on a grey winter day!

I've really enjoyed reading about your journey to Florida! The cats are all beautiful! As are your pictures that you've taken.

I enjoyed your post. My parents live in Polk County (retired early and have enjoyed every minute of it).

I'm also pleased to hear about the 16 cats - mainly because we have 12, and DH thinks nobody in the world has this many cats! :rotfl: Now I can tell him that they do!

Ours aren't all indoor cats. We live in a very rural area, and most of them live in our barn (to take care of our horses :) ), however I've got 3 in sight as I type (2 more come in when they want but mostly like it outside). All were abandoned and are now spayed or neutered. We have one (Scooter) who is a handicapped Siamese. He was born with his back feet twisted, but he's 2 now and thinks he's the king. He'll run our Lab mix off the back deck in a heartbeat if he's in the mood - one tough little boy!

Congratulations on your impending one year anniversary! :cheer2:

Thanks for the great information about Florida. We will be moving to central FL this spring and will need to visit the DMV. I will take your advice and make an appt first. I enjoyed reading about your adventure getting to FL. Good luck to you and your family. I hope you enjoy your new home for many years to come. :goodvibes

My best friend lost me and her favorite next door neighbors to Auburndale in the space of 9 months. What are the odds of that happening??!

Will you update us with some more great pictures? They would sure cheer up a lot of people on a grey winter day!

LOL, be careful what you wish for!

I remember last year when it seemed like you were running around like crazy-staying at WDW and finding a home. Did you leave any grown and married children in MA?

I would be gone tomorrow if my husband would go. We have 2 in h.s. with and 2 in college. I know my husband could make more money in his line of work, but he hates heat. I try to tell him the autobody shops would be air conditioned. I am more of an outside person than he is, but I would love every minute of it.

My daughter is still in MA. She's 28 and likes her job. She never really got the whole Disney thing. My son is just the opposite. He loves Disney and the way of life down here.

I'm lucky that my DH had spent quite a bit of time in Florida during his life and knew he would like it. Trying to convince people who think the heat will have a terrible effect on their lives is tough. We have 3 very hot months. The rest of the time it's anywhere from tolerable to down right fantastic.

I'll take 3 months of heat over 6 months of cold anyday.

I love the idea of having an orange tree and/or palm trees in my yard! And to be able to swim year round would be heavenly. I also have always had this weird fascination with alligators. Well, I don't think it's weird, but my family does!

Your pictures are beautiful. I especially like the one of Cypress Gardens and the little sticky frog! I'm going to go look at your other pictures!

Everytime we visit Florida, (and we've been there in every month except September, October, and December), we just love it. Last time we were in Florida we visited an adult community and absolutey loved some of the model homes.

Our youngest graduates from high school in June of 2008, and that's when we plan on moving to a warmer climate. Our oldest son and daughter just moved to Arizona a few months ago, and we went out a few weeks ago to visit them. It was our first time in Arizona, and I have to tell you, it was quite nice!! The weather was gorgeous. And our youngest daughter has her eye on Arizona State University, so in a few years, we're going to have to make a decision between Arizona and Florida. I'm partial to Florida, but if all of our kids end up in Arizona, I'm sure that's where we'll also decide to go.

Congrats on your successful move to Florida and I hope you have many years of happiness in your new home. This winter when we're snowed in up here in Maine, I'll be thinking of you down there in the sunshine and warmth!! :sunny:

I really, really enjoyed your story. I'm so glad to hear things are working out for you. Though a bit jealous with all the time you get to spend at WDW.

Nice storey Roberta but after going done a few weeks ago I wouldn't trade the seasons and the cols weather at Christmas time for anything. Christmas is hard when the temps outside are making me sweat, frizzing my hair, well you get it, I like living in NewEngland even though all my bills are high here in MA

Thanks for the pics! LuvFlorida - I love the picture of Henry :) Here's my tuxedo cat " Devil Boy " :
