Helping DS with his homework. Today he needs to read an article from the newspaper and work out what the main idea, arguments and supporting facts are.

I used to love a class where I had to summarize and article and list 3 pros and 3 cons. Then we discussed, and I always chose something that would aggravate the conservatives.

The comprehension and summarisation skills are hard to teach! Poor DS had 2 parents trying to help him with this task.

I once sat in on a Year 9 reading class. They were reading To Kill a Mockingbird. The students kept talking about the author as a "he".
Finally....some poor student, who obviously was a bookwork, couldn't stand it anymore and screamed out "He is a She"!

Sometimes I do wonder about the conservatives and what they are teaching!

No doubt. Some things are really hard to explain without using vocabulary beyond the students ability. Some concepts are really abstract, asking the kids to understand it is really hard even when the subject is simple. This happens to me often in the classroom.

Sounds awful Princess! What has teaching come to? I loved my 11 to 14 year olds and Social Studies and posing questions that made them think about the world around them. I played Devil's Advocate whenever they got complacent about something!

I'm working today and hopefully it will be quiet since it's a federal holiday and schools are closed and our field staff can't go into the schools and test.

Morning all! Tuesday workday!

I remember being in high school and was reading college level, they didnt have a class for me. So I was put in a remidial class reading higher level books, that really made no sense back then. I felt really stupid.

I was always one for the numbers and formulas at school. Give me a book and if it had more than 10 words on a page, I was hopelessly lost. I think the reason I had such a hard time at school when we first came to Australia was because I knew how to decipher the reading code but didn't know how to comprehend and synthesize what I was reading!

For the Year 9? It was a male teacher. Conservative? No idea.

I had a terrible time with school except reading. The highest thing they could give me to read was ( readers digest). I think that maybe during our time of school they really didnt know there may have been different learning issues with students. I couldnt do math to save myself. My dad was really good at it and I still couldnt get it.

And for not being good at that, I got a manager job at a major gas station where I had to learn all about using number and having to order my gas , and stick the tanks and read the measurements. Everything about that job was numbers. I really miss the job itself.
