With free coin exchanging no longer an option I'm going to go to Coinstar. Can't decide if I should go with cash and let them keep the 9.8 cents on the $. I'd love to have the cash bc coin saving is one of our "painless" ways to save money for vacation. But the budget mind in me wants to get 100 percent of my money by choosing a gift card (to Amazon). However.. I'd probably end up buying stuff I don't need so that is not exactly budget. I'd be interested to hear what others do.

I rarely have much change. The one time I used coin star I got an Amazon GC but I already had plans to use it on a B-day gift for my DF.

Is it possible to switch to a bank or credit union that would let you cash in for free?

I bank at my credit union at work... They don't accept coins  I bank there bc it is just easier than trying to make bank hours...much easier to just go to the window at work. Plus... No fees :thumbsup2

I use Chase, I took in $117 in coins (in the coin wrapper sleeves) today to be deposited into the vacation account.;)

Is there a coinstar you could take it to that has a giftcard that you would find to be more useful? There are several places you can cash your coins to for free with coinstar depending on the location that you use.

I count my coins and wrap them in coin wrappers, then take them to the bank.

I refuse to use the coin counters anywhere. I have no faith that they are 100% correct, and will not 'trust' a machine to count my money. I want to know BEFOREHAND how much I have to cash in.

If my bank refused to take them rolled, I'd get a manager. They are legal tender, and distributed by the bank to others. They should be required to take them in.

I agree, roll them yourself and take them to the bank for deposit.

I think I'd be finding another institution to handle my money. U.S. money, is U.S. money. To refuse to accept coins is ridiculous. It's US tender. Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't they in the United State Tender, i.e. money business...all day, every day? :confused3

Our credit union has a coin counting machine in the lobby. It counts your coins and gives you a deposit slip to present to the teller. It is a benefit of the kids club, but everyone can use it. It's free!

Our bank had one for a time as well. I was told I HAD to use it to get a slip in order to make my deposit, but I really didn't want to. The teller refused to count it.

Well, the machine came up $1.50 short of my count. I had checked it three times at home. Initially, they refused to accept my total and give me my $1.50. They said "We'll check the machine tonight and see if its off, so call tomorrow and we'll let you know."

Really? You'll know that of all the money dumped in there by customers that the extra $1.50 is mine and not somebody else's? What if there's more than $1.50?

I refused to leave the counter without my $1.50. Manager had to process it.

All I could think was how many customers who have no clue how much cash they are dumping in that tray might be getting shorted at the end of the day?

One bank that I used to use charged customers for taking coins -- wrapped or not! I asked the teller what she was talking about? She said they can only take 2 rolls of coins and anything after that, they charge 'x' amount per roll regardless of the denomination of coin.

Ridiculous! I closed my accounts there the same day.

I have heard of this happening at the counter at TD Bank, they have a machine in the lobby , and I heard of it being off when the bags are full.

our bank has a counter, but you hand over your container of coins to the clerk and they do it for you.

I'm not sure where you live but if there's a TD Bank near you, you should bank there. They have great hours (and are even open on Sunday) and they have the free coin counting machine -- and if you guess correctly (within $1.99), you get a prize! (usually a little change purse or silly bands or a magnet or something. LOL!)

Same with mine. Before that I would roll the money and use it at the grocery store because they put it on the scale to make sure that it is correct. Some don't want to take it but money is money.

I would change banks.

My husband empties the pop machines at his company and hand rolls a few hundred every month. Then I take it to the bank. Chase. They don't recount it, weigh it, or make me put my name and phone number on it. Never given me any troubles exchanging $300 in coins for $300 in cash.

AND! I get the coin wrappers there. I tell the lady I need quarter wrappers or nickels or whatever and she'll give me a stack.

Then off to the store to buy more pop....

I've even paid for purchases with wrapped quarters, which are rolls of $10. It isn't uncommon for me to have a few in the car or my purse and when I get tired of carrying them around, I use them, lol. Walmart.... target... where ever.

If your bank does not accept rolled coin, you seriously need to change banks.

I agree with other posters, DO NOT pay any company to count your money. You can get wrappers for free and any good bank. Pop in a movie, sit and roll. If you roll as you get them, it's not bad at all. I let the ash tray in my car fill up with change, then I bring it in, roll it and deposit it to my vacation fund.

Most grocery stores will exchange at customer service. I did this for a long time at publix. I hated writing my mom's name and account number for her bank to exchange them. They also weren't happy when I opened a saving account with 50 bucks in rolled coins. That was their minimum amount.
I love rolling my coins to find old ones. The last time I rolled I had over $40. That was just what I had hanging in my book bag.
