So What's Coming to the New Pleasure Island?

Ok, so now there's apparantly an IMAX theater slated for PI...perhaps the old Virgin store? If you click below and click on 'coming soon', it lists Pleasure Island.

DW was reading about it on another board somewhere...although it is possible (it is adjacent to the AMC complex), it would probably make more sense for them to simply retrofit a couple of their many screens into one IMAX screen rather than take on another building. I guess it depends on what their occupancy is on the existing theaters.

That was my thought as well. And of course even though the theater is named the AMC Pleasure Island, it isn't really on the island. It's on the West Side. So even though Disney might end up spinning this like it's a positive change to Pleasure Island, it really has nothing to do with the wasteland that is Pleasure Island these days. Black 562, I'm not criticising you for posting this here. I'm just irritated with Disney because they keep pointing out things that are not on the Island and acting as though the clubs were closed to make way for those things, when clearly they were not. The Hanes T-shirt shop, the covering over the Marketplace stage, the tethered hot air balloon, and probably now the Imax . . . none of those are actually on the island. Any of them could have opened while the clubs were still open. The clubs have been replaced by. . . nothing at all. No matter how they try to spin it, that isn't good.

I'm familiar with a few of the more recent imax additions to AMC theaters and they all have been retro-fitted without using new space.

Agreed. I don't think that people should expect this to be one of those big IMAX dome screens. When AMC adds an IMAX screen to a theater, it typically just chooses one of the larger auditoriums, installs the IMAX projector and sound system, and enlarges the screen a bit.

Where exactly is the South American restaurant going to be? I heard it's opening in May...

I may be blind, but I didn't see it before, and I still don't see it now. I see GA, NC, KY, and TX..

Between San Diego and New York:

ORLANDO AREA AMC Pleasure Island 24 - TBD

It's in the totally renovated (twice) building that formerly housed the Missing Link Sausage Company and some other mundane shops.

Interesting article about owners of traditional LARGE IMAX theaters being against the smaller digital IMAX theaters being able to use the IMAX name without differentiating:

For those of you unable to make a special trip out to PI just to see the new PI Live festivities, someone has posted it on YouTube:

Hmmm....we could reopen some of the clubs and clear $50K per night.....or we could do this. Tough call. This is cute for the kids but hardly a revenue-generator and hardly a substitute for what was there.

PS-thanks to my Blog reader Ken for proving the link to me.

OK...we saw the balloon floating yesterday when we drove in. I am still trying to locate where they are actually launching it from.

We ate dinner at T-Rex. My reviews will be here shortly after I transpose them from my site.

I am here in Disney, so if anyone has any questions, then ask, and I will get the answers.

I will start my video news on Sunday, or Monday.

Later all.

Happy Easter.
