SO what is it that you all do....?

A lot of companies/governments are in some form of a hiring freeze or another. Although some are more on paper then in reality (ie. NY hiring freeze has netted 18,000 new jobs since implemented in July this year...)

So I have a question for all of you with desk jobs.

Are you allowed to play on the Internet while at work, or do you just sneak it in?

I cant even text on my cell phone at my work locatioin!:sad2:

We have a pretty broad policy, basically if we are doing our jobs, it's fine. I tend to surf when I'm running statistical analysis (programs that just need time and take up PC resources) or queries.

My boss doesn't mind at all! :)

FYI - I'm sleeping with my boss as well ;)

The official policy is that it's forbidden and sites like myspace and facebook are actually blocked.

In practice, no one cares as long as the work is getting done, and deadlines are being met.

Plus, a lot of my job is cyclical. During the beginning and end of the month there's a lot more to do than in the third week of the month. And if the resort is slow, it really decreases our work load. In that case, we're encouraged to "look busy" in case anyone comes into the office. We don't want to have to cut any positions because we didn't look busy during our slow week and then suffer when we're one person down during crunch time.

I'm the CFO of a small software company. Our IT Policy states: "Use of [company name] resources for personal use is acceptable only to the extent that it does not interfere with the business obligations of [company name]. Employees are responsible for completing their assignments in a timely fashion, and for exercising good judgment regarding the personal use of [company name] resources."

So basically, as long as your work gets done, it's ok to take some time out here and there to play.

yeah ... this is my policy too! :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2
As long as you have time to play - it's okay if a little work gets done.

I am a Field Metering Supervisor for one of the top four electric companies in the US. I am responsible for supervising the employees who read electric meters, turn people's power on and off when they move, turning people off for non-payment, and any maintenance required on meters.

Our policy is it is okay to surf the web if your work is getting done. The sites they forbid come up with a big red stop sign when you go to them with a warning that if you proceed you can and will be terminated.

Depends which part of my job you consider.

When I'm teaching, I couldn't even dream of playing on the web. But, since prep time I'm given is really only long enough for a fifth of the prep that I do, it doesn't really matter whether my surfing breaks occur in a school or at home--of course, this means that the work always comes home.

When I'm being a grad student, I can surf all day long if I want...but, then, I pay for it later.

Nope -- I could get fired... This winter is looking pretty dead in terms of workload so I've been thinking about bringing a Laptop from home and getting an air card.

We are not supposed to text or talk on our phones while on the clock. I usually don't have a problem not talking on my phone, but a dozen or so quick text messages a day with Corey are a necessity, since she is almost always on the road. So far, the bosses have been pretty understanding.

We are not supposed to "play" on the internet. We are allowed online for business purposes or to find something for the boss, but if we are on the clock, we are not supposed to "play". I usually do a pretty good job of just DIS'ing while at lunch, but you know, sometimes, I just can't freakin' help myself.

If they ever come out with a DISpatch, I am first in line at the pharmacy!

Wouldn't you all love to know who in their right minds would hire me????

Well I'll tell you who: I work for an Electronic Parts Distributor. We sell electronic repair and replacement parts. I am the only female in a small office of five people. I am also the only part-timer. Everyone agrees that when I am away (which is often) the office has no "flair". I think this is the only reason they keep me....honestly.

As for playing on the computer..Yup, it's ok.

For the record...I have a monkey's job: I file, I make photo copies and I take orders and inquiries over the phone...But I love these guys with all my heart and I go to work everyday grateful for a job.

I'm a computer tech. And as long as you aren't streaming audio/video, downloading games on the computers and work is getting done no one really cares unless the network starts to come to a crawl. Then the WAN team starts yelling although it normally has nothing to do w/ what ppl are doing, they just need to find someone else to blame besides their equipment.
