So what did people think about the pedicab/rickshaws that run on the paths?

Welcome to the boards, interesting 1st post. Would be a worthwhile poll.

I'll bite...I despise them!

IMO, they are:

* demeaning to the 'peddlers'

* dangerous to pedestrians, the pragmatist in me is curious as to insurance liability - who owns/operates/licenses this operation?

* responsible for numerous squished lizard carcasses littering the sidewalks, yeeech.

We only used them twice. I liked riding on them. We always made sure to tip well. My DS and I rode from US to Hard Rock and I gave the guy $5. The next time DH, DS, DD, and myself rode from Hard Rock to US and we gave him $8. The guys were very nice. The boat dock was so far from Hard Rock, and it was very slow. I had blisters on my toes and was just too tired to walk.

I haven't been there since the pedicabs came about, but we enjoyed walking on the pathway to and from RPR all the time, often stopping to admire the plantings or watch a chameleon or two. Sometimes we took the boats, but unless we we super tired, we took the slow stroll along the path, often stopping to watch things in the water..there are turtles and fish to see also. It sounds like the pedicab things are a horrible addition to those beautiful paths. That's a real shame.

I think it is just a matterof time until someone gets run over. I know while we were there being a party of 5 we got spread out on the walks sometimes and if I am talking or looking at the scenery I drown out back round noise. There were a couple of times the bikes had to come to a screeching halt to avoid hitting someone.

My kids loved them. I thought they were fun and the boy drivers were cute and sweet and friendly. They're better than waiting for the boat at Portofino.

I think they were one of those unfortunate afterthoughts on Uni's part. The only reason they are there is because there is a demand for them. No demand, they disappear. Having said that, if they'd planned on it from the beginning, the path would have been made wider with maybe a bike lane.

If you're getting run off the path, please let someone know. I've never had this problem. I think a slower speed limit would take care of any speeders. Actually it would be an easy fix. (They're bikes after all, fit them all with the same size gear and they would only be able to pedal a certain speed.)

I don't buy the demeaning thing though. No one's forcing them to do this, it obviously appeals to them on some level, it's easy (mentally anyway!), work hours suit them, qualifications are low, quick money, whatever.

How about making them free for club level? Now that's a perk I'd like to see. We've never used them. I enjoy the walk to the park in the morning and I've never seen them then. (HRH) But the way home, it's usually tempting. I never seem to time the boat right.

I just got done watching a video from that rickshaw company that was in a link on another thread. I never gave them that much thought, until I seen them in action. I'm just an ordinary guy with no law degree, etc, but that service kind of scares me and looks like a lawsuit waiting to happen. They seem to be going really fast and just squeezing by people and those paths don't seem wide enough at all. From the look on the driver's faces, they look to be college guys who don't care about much (who does at that age) and are just doing this for a short time to make a quick buck. You can see that it's probably in their best interest to get passengers off as fast as you can and go on to the next. That's the beauty or drawback of working for commission.

Does anybody remember back in the late 1980's and the controversy surrounding Domino's pizza and their 30 minute delivery guarantee and how many traffic accidents were caused? Domino's was forced to drop that program due to the many lawsuits and bad PR from it. Lawsuits and the threat of them, seem to be the only way to get corporate headquarters attention, sad but true. It does seem to be an after thought of Universals management and they should widen those paths and have one side just for people who walk. Just like the walking/bike paths that are popular in my area. You have a red or yellow line and no bikes can cross it.

I didn't have too much of an opinion until I saw the video and complaints on other threads. I have to say, I think that in it's present form, it doesn't look like a good idea.

I don't want to stumble upon whatever creature is eating the squished lizard carcasses.

As a former employee/ bike mechanic of 15 years I can say the maintenance is non existant. I was hired as a mechanic in which I was never paid. When I diagnosed all 8 pedicabs I was shocked at the horrible condition of these heavy vehicles which operate extremely close to guests and transporting people. None of the 8 cabs had working brakes, many of them were missing half of the spokes which are used to hold a family of 5. The owner and manager have no concept of maintenance and see it as an unnecessary cost. Irresponsible and a real danger to guests. They dont care about your safety, they want your money.

why would you bring up an old post that is going on 5 years ago?

and, this being your first post here, is this an axe to grind?

why don't you start a new thread so it can be discussed there....

pedicab issues have really changed over the years since 2007.
