For the big Thanksgiving meal, I always love to see what folks cook. It's neat to see what dish just has to be there for it to seem like it's really a holiday and to see how things vary from region to region.

So, at Maggie & Gabby's house, we are dining alone this year. Gabby's mom and sisters are too far away for us to visit this year. My dad and her dad are too far away too for us this year. So, being that Gabby had her annual business conference this past weekend, I was not about to volunteer to cook for everyone and do all of that work by myself. Frankly, I am just not up to it this year, since the infection that I have been battling in my leg has flared up again.

On the menu:
Rock Cornish Game Hens....prepared with herb butter and stuffed with aromatics.....baking right now and smells heavenly.
Deviled Eggs....next up for preparation and a holiday meal staple from both our homes.
Cornbread dressing......mixed it up last night and baked it first thing this morning. If it taste as good as it looks and smells, it's a leftover dish that I won't mind eating for the next 2 or 3 days.
Speckled Butter Beans......prepared with aromatics, Clifty Farms ham, and a variety of good things, including a dab of tomato paste.
Turnips & Turnip Greens.....prepared with aromatics, Clifty Farms ham, a bit of hot pepper and vinegar.
Mashed Potatoes.....from the box, but made with love. ;)
Turkey Gravy.....had to work in some turkey somewhere, so this was the winner.
Cranberry Sauce....from a can....you just can't escape this stuff at the holidays.
Pumpkin Pie.....baked it last night.
Sugar Free Cool Whip...the one bit of "good behavior" attached to the meal. :lmao:

So, what's on your menu? Maggie

Big honkin' turkey and it smells gooooooood (about an hour to go) Brined it last night with standard poultry herbs and then threw in a handful of bruised juniper berries for good measure. Two kinds of rolls -- soft white rolls and cracked/wheat whole wheat as well. cornbread and sausage stuffing, green bean casserole, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes (Dear DDIL is bringing these), cranberry sauce, corn on the cob from this summer's garden, three kinds of pie (I cheated and am using frozen ones this year -- my man-flu earlier this week kinda took the wind outa my sails -- cooking-wise), pickles, olives, and all that stuff.

Best part -- DH and DS were going to leave for their hunting trip today, have postponed their departure till tomorrow morning. My WONDERFUL Daughter is visiting for the weekend :goodvibes and I'm just about as happy as I could be.

Well, it went like this:

Huge turkey (that the boy called a Monster Chicken)! LOLOL
Wild mushroom dressing
Gravy
Mashed potato
Rutabaga with cream and butter
Broccoli spears with lemon butter sauce
Sweet potato casserole (no, not the kind with marshmallows! this had cognac in it)
Cheesy corn casserole
Macaroni and cheese with sharp white cheddar and bacon
Cranberry sauce (whole berries)
Jellied cranberry and pomegranite sauce
Rye, wheat, and whole grain rolls
Pickled hot okra (sorry Rick!) olives and cornichons

Lemon pie
Pecan pie

Mulled cider
Unoaked Chardonnay (or however you spell that).

I think that was it!

Since we went to a friend's house, I only made 2 chocolate pies (one for home one to bring).

Today I just carved up a pumpkin I had, and I'm boiling it now so I can peel it.

Later today I make pumpkin bread, and maybe some pumpkin pancakes and a pumpkin pie too :thumbsup2

Unoaked Chardonnay (or however you spell that).

I had an "oak-free" chardonnay -- as well. This is the first year that I've noticed this in the stores...I'm guessing it either has something to do with the wine's viniculture or aging process. (Mine wasn't aged much -- a 2006 St. Supery). Anybody know for sure what the anti-oak thing is all about?

Cooking? What's this cooking stuff? You mean there is more involved in Thanksgiving then driving to the in-laws house and eating until you can barely move, and then deluding yourself that you have the energy to keep up w/ a three yr old how's had a nap and some pie? :)
