My transmission went out on my Ford 500 car. We have had nothing but trouble from this vehicle. Its only 2 1/2 years old and has 62,000 miles on it.
We called ford and asked if they could help split the cost with us to repair it, and they said no and was really rude. It is only 2,000 miles past the warranty. Here is the ouch part... it will cost us 5600 to repair the transmission. We have talked to others who have the same car and had transmissions go out too.
I am really dissappointed in buying a Ford car.

Did you check for recalls? I'm not sure what year your car is but there are a couple of transmission related recalls listed for that model.

thank you so much for the website. i have a 2007, and they (ford) claims there in no recalls on this model. but that website shows there is.

Well with the recall number, you can start your research. If nothing else, my googling found a LOT of unhappy 500 owners. Might be class-action time so you all can get your cars fixed.

I know it's rare, but I had the same issue with my Honda Odyssey - 47,000 miles! Finally they agreed to split the cost.

I would be really upset too! Hope you have some luck with the recall information.

What a shame - sorry to hear. I have had Fords and Mercurys for many years now and really like them. I've never had any problems.

how did u get them to agree? what steps did u take?

Don't know about the PP, but when we had an issue with something major needing replacing shortly after the warranty period expired, we went through arbitration steps. It was a long time ago (Chrysler if I'm remembering right) but it entailed writing a letter detailing everything then sending it to an arbiter. This was prior to widespread internet use so I don't even know where I found the information (in the car manual maybe?) but you should be able to find something much easier now. After review, it was determined that Chrysler should share in the repair costs (maybe they paid the entire thing, I don't remember). Good luck to you! Transmissions should not go out on a 2 year old car!

If you end up having to pay for it yourself, look for a reliable local transmission repair shop. We put a rebuilt transmission in a van a few years ago and got another four years out of the vehicle. It was less than 1/3 of your quote -- someone told me its about $2,400 now. Of course, that will depend on the vehicle. It's a two-person shop (father and son) that does only transmissions. We have our regular repairs done at a different father and son place. So reliable and trustworthy.

Holy smokes @ $5600! Our transmission went out on our Malibu a few years ago and it was $2000 to rebuild it. I'd definitely get a few quotes and then deal with Ford in hopes they contribute.

we were told by a local mechanic, that there is only 1 place in the US that makes these transmissions. They are belt driven and don't feel them shift. He said the only place to order the transmission is either thru Ford or from that company and both cost the same , where with Ford I get another warranty when replaced.
I tried to trade the car in at several dealerships but that car has the worst resale value ever!!! Only worth $9700. I am upside down big time!

But the OP said it has 62,000 miles. I think that's alot of miles for a 2 year old car.

I know what it's like to have transmission problems. We had to replace ours twice years ago on a Ford Econline van. Once was on our way to WDW!!!!! My husband has refused to purchase a Ford ever since!!

Good luck getting satisfaction.

Similar thing happened with my Jeep Grand Cherokee. We bought it brand new. Then at only 200 miles past the warranty, thing after thing after thing started to go on it. I contacted Jeep and they wanted NOTHING to do with it. "We're sorry you're having problems." That was their response. :sad2: Nice, huh???

the dealership that you called, do you take your car in for service there on a regular basis--basically do you have a long-standing relationship with this dealership? My husband is a fixed op director at a good sized ford dealership. A good service manager will go to bat for you with ford but usually if you are a long-standing customer. I've seen cases where ford will step up and do this, it really depends on the service manager. I will say that if it were me, my car, they will not do anything because of my husband working at the dealership. They will not show preferential treatment to workers, exact opposite actually.
