Keep in mind that Marvel Studios (film) and Marvel Worldwide (comics) have functioned mostly independently for quite some time now. There is unlikely to be any change in the way in MCU Thor is represented.

Though it would be awesome if Marvel Studios would start featuring some of the awesome women in the Marvel Worldwide universe a bit more. So far they've mostly been afterthoughts. I guess if I'm female, I'm just supposed to like princesses and leave the superheroes for the boys.

Though, a female Thor WOULD technically be a princess...

I love this!!! I have very little time to read comic books anymore, but I would make time for this!

I enjoy the Thor movies very much, but this would be a welcome and interesting evolution. I am crossing fingers it comes to fruition. There's not enough main female characters who aren't sidekicks.

I agree there won't be any change in the way the MCU Thor is represented, this is similar to last weeks announcement that Steve Rogers is being replaced as Captain America.

The comic books & movies exist in multiple universes, still I think this is a positive step forward in having more leading female characters.

I agree with the "lame" as mentioned above. I am all for strong female heroes but taking an already male hero and remaking him a her just sounds lame. Come up with a new idea for a new female marvel, don't change Thor, completely lame.

Are you kidding? Imagine turning Pluto in a cat! Think if they turned Donald into a pig. Just imagine next year you tune in to watch the "Friends" Reunion episode, only to find out they've been replaced with the cast of Laverne and Shirley. Except Laverne is Phobe, Squiggy is Joey, ... you get the picture.

It does seem suspect that Disney, who bought Marvel, is responsible for changing Captain America and Thor all at the same time. They're obviously trying to reach out to different demographics other than pasty white males such as myself. But if that's the case, create something totally different. Don't take an existing superstar and flush it. That's just lame.

This is pretty common in comic books. There are hundreds of sub comics for each super hero. I am sure this will be treated as such as well.

Even in the announcement they say it will only happen in the all new Avengers NOW story line. This won't change any of the previous incarnations.

This isn't the first time a comic book character changed drastically and it won't be the last.

I feel like most of the people who are outraged by this are people who don't really read comics, and don't realize that Thor's role being taken over by a woman (Because if you're paying attention, you'd know that it's not like Thor is just going to wake up as a woman one morning.) isn't that big a deal.

Yes, I was also going to say this. I believe the people who are upset are those who don't understand (and appreciate) comic book lore and the way the stories can drastically evolve.

For those who are thinking it's lame, this is similar to Barbara Gordon becoming Batgirl in the Batman series, but I think this is an even stronger and more positive step because a female will actually be stepping in the role of Thor, not becoming the "female Thor." But the point with Batgirl is that this is in no way a new concept in comic books, it's simply another step. Usually, no one ever would have heard of this outside comic book fans, but because of the movies, it became mainstream news.

As a few posters have said, this is nothing new & won't reflect on the cinematic universe (or even any animated or merchandising)

In terms of comic books, many characters have multiple titles going at any given time (Archie is even dying in one of his versions)

Spider-Man & Batman have had different characters take on the role instead of Peter Parker & Bruce Wayne.

The problem is, when many mainstream media outlets reports it, they'll focus on "Thor is now a woman" or "Captain American is now African American" without really explaining (or glossing over) the fact it's for a specific set of books & NOT the mainstream / pop culture versions general audiences now.

It's not the same at all. Comic books work this way. They drastically evolve. Comparing them to Disney cartoons or standard tv comedy is like comparing apples to.... churros. They aren't remotely the same. Comic book lore is very, very complex and ever evolving.

As I mentioned above, they have done similar things already. Do you know Batman wasn't always Bruce Wayne? Do you think that is also lame? The cape was worn by Dick Grayson, who was also one of multiple Robins. There was also Batgirl, and she was played by several women who then went on to become separate superheroes in their own series. Captain America was not always Steve Rogers. This is something that slightly entered the Avengers movie universe with the first Captain America movie when they found him- the comic book version had a different person taking on the Captain America persona during that time.

So, really, with the movies, as already said, they aren't going to change. If that's all you care about (and I'm guessing it is for the majority of people), this news shouldn't matter in the least to you. For comic book fans, this is just another twist like so many others, the difference being it's an exciting and cool one for us female fans. Lame, though? Absolutely not. And no, Disney is not responsible for the comic book line evolving. This is a natural part of comic books and has been for decades.
