So, should I pack a HUGE thing of Lysol?

After reading several posts in different forums..it gets me to wondering if I should bring a massive arsonal of Lysol with us?! Granted, we are going in July, but we have all come down with several viruses this year and I want to prevent my poor little almost 2 yr old from getting another one. By all means, it's good for them to build up immunity, but hey..it doesn't need to be done in one year! :flower: I am not a germaphobe, just tired of throwing up, being throwed up on, and tired of cleaning it. SO would you bring Lysol?

The next time I am definitely packing the lysol packetttes, along with purell (massive quantities :) ).

It will be our fourth trip, and I have yet to bring or do anything extra, but I must agree with you, there are too many stories of people become sick, and quarantined to their rooms....

I did have the kids, as well as ourselves wash their hands a little longer, and a little more often...

Their are so many packets of antiseptics out there, that it sure couldn't hurt... :goodvibes

i am packing my large dispenser of germ-x (hand sanitizer)and probably a can of lysol- the way i see it is that its better to be safe then sorry....and i have had my share of being thrown up on this winter season too  :crazy2:

:sunny: I am not a germophobe either but I do plan to bring clorox wipes with us and wipe down the surfaces of our room just to be on the safe side.
The antibacterial gels are good but they don't do anything for viruses. The best thing is still lots of hand washing - lathering and scrubbing for about 15 seconds and then rinsing for about 15 seconds. I have read that we don't wash and particularly rinse long enough.

Soap works by lifting the germs off of your hands so the action of scrubbing your hands together helps. Then you have to rinse long enough to get the soap and germs off.

I have heard of people teaching their kids a little song that lasts about 15 - 20 seconds then they sing it while they wash and again while they rinse.

Just an idea,
Sandy

I love my wipes, but they do not kill germs unless the surface stays wet for several minutes.

I am taking my Lysol, I take it on all trips, I got a stomach bug or bugs, when we were in WDW one year, and ended up having to take 2 rounds of Cipro to get rid to the thing. After hearing about all the things that you can get on the cruise, my 17 years old said mom, "we will be taking stuff so you don't get sick again, hand sanitizer, wipes, sprays whatever we need and you are not getting any ice or water that is not in a bottle."

We've done 5 cruises in 4 years. No Lysol or other product and no sickness .... except for being made sick 'cause I had to leave the Magic each time.

DCL provides hand sanitizers and the room stewards clean VERY WELL with Lysol type solutions. Those ships are cleaner than your house!

We went to PA last weekend and my youngest got sick. From us being in tight quarters in the hotel room and cleaning up after her, DH and I both got sick at the same time (2 hrs after we got home). I told the hotel to really spray and clean in there as my DD was ill. SO I want to try to avois THAT again..as much as possible. Has anyone ever picked up a virus or "bug" in the summer months? I'd think it would be unusual, but one never knows for sure.

On our last trip on the Magic we used Clorox wipes to wipe everything down when we arrived and hand sanitizer each time we entered the cabin. Despite our efforts, we all came down with a virus during the cruise.

2 Magic cruises = 2 bouts of stomach virus. :cold:

Our last cruise I got the stomach virus the day I got home. I vomited for 24 hours straight.
I would appreciate any suggestions for our cruise this next september, I really never want to get that again. A friend of ours told us that she takes antibacterial hand soap to wash their hands. I think I might do that as well.

Don't forget, germs are everywhere, not just on the ship. They are at the airports and on the airplanes, they are on the transportation to the ship, they are in the terminal, they are at every port of call.

I think the best thing you can do it to make sure you wash your hands well and often.

We were on the Magic last March and none of us came home sick.

Hope everyone stays healthy!

I know no one likes to hear this ... but anti-BACTERIAL soap doesn't help you avoid a VIRUS. The purell and other hand sanitizers also only work to kill bacteria. On the plus side, the soap is probably better than the purell or the wipes since you are using it to wash your hands with water. Washing your hands properly with soap and water (any soap) will remove far more bacteria AND viruses!

We didn't do anything special for our cruise (late October and they were already into their winter anti-flu/virus mode on board) other than wash our hands more often. We made a point of washing hands when we came back to our cabin, right before leaving our cabin, before meals, every restroom stop (of course!) and DS5 had to do it again each time he went to the club. None of us got sick.

we're definitely packing a can of Lysol - I like the smell vs air fresheners, and it does double duty as a sanitizer....sometimes the toilet area gets a funky smell.....

Yes we did bring Lysol and clorox wipes, cleaned it all, and felt much better about the room after did, door knobs, the remote all of it. We have been quarantied before on another cruise my 3 year old got a virus and it was not fun. So if it helps a bit its worth packing and feeling like you did all you could do.

I thought I'd pass on some info..

I packed a can of Lysol in my suitcase (checked luggage) and it was confiscated by inspectors at AA airlines.

I know since it's an aerosol it's a safety issue, but didn't even think when I was packing.

Just a reminder.

The soap is a good idea, too. Mickey hugger....we're driving down, but would DCL take it away, too? Has anyone gotten a virus during the summer? BTW, hasn't this always been an issue? It just seems like it's come to the media's attention in the last few years.

I am not surprised about the can of Lysol.. It is a VERY dangerous good...Although one can is not huge, same as a can of hair spray...

I think that there may be more of a chance of viruses on the cruise, due to confinement, and small spaces also.. Just like in a classroom, with young ones, and shared items.. The kids clubs are clean, but they are full of young children...

I hope we go 4/4 with not getting sick in September.....We can only be as clean and cautious as possible....

As others have said, hand sanitizers do NOTHING for a virus, just bacteria. So how long should you wash your hands with soap & water? I've read in several places that you should really lather up for 2 verses of "Happy Birthday". So sing it in your head for 2 verses and rinse for a minimum of 1 verse. Be sure to scrub between fingers, and under nails. Stair railings, door knobs, and elevator buttons are FULL of germs, anywhere that many people put their hands.

Remember that traveling to other countries (and with people FROM different countries) increases the chance that you will come into contact with infectious agents your body has never seen before and, consequently, has no immunity to. Handwashing is your only option. Soap and water does the most good. Hand sanitizers and wipes only create resistant bugs.

The best thing to do is as soon as you enter your stateroom, take an Antibacterial Wipe and wipe down the Telephone and the Remote Control! These are the two most infected parts of the entire stateroom! Also wipe down the handles to the doors and quickly wipe down any counter surfaces!

I've also started to wipe the Airplane armrests and the trays before we get settled on the plane!

It's better to be overcautious than sick on your vacation!

Happy Sailing
