`They ... had so many plans' Family mourns mother who died while triplets were born

KALAMAZOO -- Friends of a Comstock Township man whose wife died unexpectedly giving birth to triplets Tuesday are seeking the community's help.

Tina Marie Hagenbuch and her husband, Jeff, had been enjoying an uneventful pregnancy. But when she was seven months pregnant, the 42-year-old Comstock woman was admitted last week to Bronson Methodist Hospital with preeclampsia and put on bed rest.

Preeclampsia is a disorder that happens only during or right after pregnancy. It is characterized by high blood pressure and other symptoms.

On Tuesday morning ``she was having a hard time breathing, and they thought she had some fluid on her lung, so they thought it was best to take the babies,'' said Hagenbuch's best friend, Brienne Stiteler.

There was no hint of what was to come while doctors delivered the babies through a Caesarian section, she said.

``We were all in her room right before (delivery). She was laughing, and she was up moving around. There was no indication anything was wrong,'' Stiteler said.

But Hagenbuch lost consciousness some time after doctors delivered the first baby, a boy named Teegan.

``They showed him to her, and as far as I know, things started to fall apart right after. ... They tried everything to save her,'' Stiteler said.

The mother never got to see the two other babies, girls named Trinity and Rowan. But all three, born at 29 weeks on Thursday, are doing well at Bronson and breathing on their own.

Stiteler said the cause of death is unknown and an autopsy is being performed in Lansing. The findings of that examination won't be known for eight weeks.

Meanwhile, Jeffrey Hagenbuch is overwhelmed and grieving the loss of his wife of less than two years, Stiteler said. They'd been a couple for about six years.

Friends and family members are hoping the community will rally to support a memorial fund in Tina Marie Hagenbuch's name. The fund will help pay for a full-time nurse or nanny and other expenses after the babies come home in about eight weeks.

``It's one thing to have one baby and four hands,'' and quite another to have three babies and just two hands, Stiteler said.

Those willing to donate diapers and baby wipes may do so at the Comstock Township offices at 6138 King Highway. Tina Marie Hagenbuch worked there for several years and was the administrative assistant to Supervisor Timothy Hudson.

Township Clerk Anna Goodsell said Tina Marie Hagenbuch was invaluable to that office and sometimes more knowledgeable than other staff members about zoning, community planning and other issues.

Hudson is going to be ``lost without her because she was a very good assistant,'' said Goodsell, who worked with Tina Marie Hagenbuch for about seven years.

``She had a wonderful sense of humor and could keep us laughing sometimes when it wasn't so easy to laugh,'' Goodsell said.

A loving, spiritual person with a colorful personality is how Stiteler described her friend.

``She was just amazing. She was funny. She was patient. She loved her garden. She loved to be outside. She loved her kids so much, and she was just so looking forward to these babies, and they just had so many plans,'' Stiteler said.

Tina Marie Hagenbuch also had two other daughters, 21-year-old Skye Mercer, of Portage, and 15-year-old Tylar Mercer, of Comstock. She also is survived by her mother and stepfather, Carolyn and James Anderson; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Stacey Anderson and Jennifer and Troy Book; her mother-in-law, Shirley Clothier, and her husband, Ed; and her father-in-law, Gerald Hagenbuch, and his wife, Yvonne.

Visitation is set for 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Comstock Chapel, 6121 King Highway. The family asks that everyone who attends wear colorful clothing to celebrate Tina Marie Hagenbuch's love of color.

Cremation will follow visitation, and private inurnment services will take place later.

Memorial fund

The Tina M. Hagenbuch Memorial Fund has been set up at Consumers Credit Union, 5940 Gull Road, to help care for her three newborn babies. Checks should be payable to Jeffrey Hagenbuch, her husband. Those wanting to donate diapers and baby wipes should bring them to the Comstock Township offices at 6138 King Highway.

That's terrible. The idea of preeclampsia terrified me when I was pregnant.

How sad! Also so scary to think that it has happened to two families in such a short period of time.

I lived 5 minutes from where this woman lived.. its just so sad. IRght before the holidays too.

What scare me is the preeclampsia, I had that with my son and he was delivered via c-section because of it. My heart rate got up 220. I never really took it to heart that it could have killed me, I really felt fine. But they had told me at the time they were surprised I hadn't went into seisures.

My prayers go out to this family. I had posted a link to that other family (In Tuscon I believe) and was so surprised when one happened so close to home.

Bless you Teegan, Trinity, and Rowan

How very sad. Childbirth can be dangerous. My veterinarian retired recently to take help take care of his twin grandchildren. His daughter suffered a massive stroke during delivery last year and still can't walk or hold her babies. At least she is there to see them and watch them grow.

I had preeclampsia with my first one. I didn't think a lot of it until the doctor got VERY concerned. Then I panicked. Very sad for the father and children left behind.

Major abdominal surgery has such huge risks. Especially when you're doing it on someone who is already sick (the pre-e stuff and the difficulty breathing (hey wait, I had that too...was told it's just part of being pregnant!)). If they didn't have an idea of what was to come, I don't think they were paying attention, because it's dangerous stuff, to have surgery.

This woman actually posted on The Nest baby boards and had lots of internet friends on there and IRL friends that now post updates on the triplets. They seem to be doing well...

That's good to know! :thumbsup2

Very sad.

Are the risks higher (for things like this) for woman who are carrying triplets (or more) &/or women in their 40s?

Yes Hound, the risk is higher if you are over 40, actually over 35. I almost died with eeclampsia when I was pregnant with my first child. I had seizure after seizure but thankfully my wonderful doctors prevented a stroke or worse.....

I went on to have 2 uneventful pregnancies after that, but they were high risk due to my history.

Thanks for the information Tiggersmom.

Such a sad story, I'm glad they have the support of his community. I feel for all 5 of her children.

A truly tragic story. I feel bad for her husband and those precious babies that will have to grow up without a mother.

Thank you everyone for your support. My name is Tylar, the second daughter of Tina Hagenbuch. Numerous people have donated so much to our family. I would like you all to know that the triplets are healthy and growing. They run around the room like no other and scream and yell just like any other children. Rowan even says hi and bye now. :) Thank you all again for spreading the word of my mom. I know she appreciates all of you.

Sometimes, the only road to recovery is after birthing teh children and time was not on her side to deliver teh traditional way (I'm not sure they deliver triplets the traditional way).

Yes it is dangerous--however, likely she would have died if they left the babies in--and then teh babies would have been at risk for death b/c it still would have been an emergency surgery.

The sarcasm in your post suggest you believe to know more about her medical condition than her physicians. Pre-eclampsia can be deadly.

If I have misinterpreted, I apologize--but there are risks in pregnancy that some women do experience that do threaten their life and sometimes take it.
