For what it is worth, I was there last night (Friday) and was expecting a massive crowd, after all the recent reports.
It was incredibly reasonable. I have been there three times in the last three weeks, the first two times on a weekday, and last night was by far the least crowded Osborne lights. There was room to walk around, and they had no traffic control In place. You could enter and leave the lights wherever you wanted along the street.
Whether this was because it is the first day to black out seasonal passes, or who knows what other factor, it is a good sign for those visiting.
It was also the first night of the regularly scheduled new Star Wars fireworks. I thought that would translate to larger crowds as well, but it was fine.
