So my DH and I have thought about becoming members of the DVC for 5 years now. It all started while we were on our honeymoon in WDW in 2000. We consider doing it every year and I would just like to hear from those of you who are members.

Here's our situation....
Me (29 years old)
DH (30 years old)
DS (3 years old)

are all disney lovers BIG TIME. We go to disney at least once a year (we live in alabama) and spend about a total of $5000 when we go. (we usually stay at POFQ as you can see) When we go we like to stay 7-10 days.

Could we benefit from DVC????

Except for your ages, you sound exactly like us when we purchased. We were going every other year and spending upwards of $5000, so doing a "pre-paid" DVC vacation made lots of sense to us. You are also close enough geographically, to make it possible as well. I would advise you to buy the most points you can by going into the least debt you can. That might mean a home equity loan or a savings account, but if you are going to figure in finance charges, it isn't as good a deal. You can always add more points on later, when you have the means. You might also consider resales.

HOw do the resales work?

They end up the same as if you bought from Disney but they are contracts which have already been sold by Disney to people who are now selling them. You can usually get them for a slightly lower price than what Disney is charging per point and at any resort you want. The downside of not buying from Disney for many is not being able to take advantage of Disney's easy financing.

Look at the top of this page and click on DVC resales for the site sponsor's list of available contracts. There are also a couple more responsible re-sellers who you could find without too much of a problem.

Run the numbers on what you pay vs what you'd pay for DVC over the years. Compare the number of points for a studio and the cost therein vs PO at the type of discounts you usually get. Assuming your usual trips that are longer than 7 days involve 2 weekends, you likely will not be able to show a savings. You still might be able to get better accommodations for the same price.

What part of AL are you from?

Cool! My husband and I both went to University of Alabama at Birmingham Nursing school.

Absolutely. Look into it, because you guys would be the perfect profile for DVCers.

DH & I first saw it on our honeymoon in 1991...they were building OKW at the time. I wanted to buy then, but "Mr.Practical" thought that we should save for a house first...can you imagine!!!!!! ;)

Anyhow, we ended up buying 6 years later. Started with 200 points at OKW purchased through Disney. Bought a 230 point resale through The Timeshare Store in 2002, again at OKW.

One of the best decisions we ever made. I still think we should have bought it in 1991 though!!!! ;)
