If anyone has found a cough medicine that really seems to work, please let me know! About once a year I get a bad cold that ends with a hacking cough that hangs on and on. Right now I have a terrible dry cough that bugs me night and day. My abs are sore and my head hurts from coughing so much! I don't think it's bronchitis or anything like that, just a nagging virus. Last year I had a cough just like this and the doctor prescribed something called tessalon pearls but those didn't seem to do much to keep me from coughing. I tried Robitussin cough suppressant yesterday with no success either.

I feel okay other than the cough but I hate it when I am at Target or wherever and I get a coughing fit and people look at me like I am dying or something!

Anyone have any advice? Thanks!

I used to take Creomulsion--but it tastes nasty--whenever I have the cough that beats all coughs..that has helped.

I usually use Vicks Formula 44. There's also 44D - I don't remember what the difference is between the two but I know that's the only brand that works for me!

Additionally--I was in a musical once and had a TERRIBLE cough..I went to the doctor and said point blank that the OTC stuff just doesn't work properly and my cough had to disappear. He prescribed a cough medicine with Codeine in it...now it knocks you out at first..but by golly..that cough disappeared mighty quick. I forget what it is called...but if you just call your DOC and let them know that the OTC stuff isn't working...they should be able to prescribe something that will work.

When 2 of my 5 kids and I get really bad coughs like this the dr. gives us prescription cough medicine with codeine in it too. Tastes blech, knocks you out, but cough is usually gone in 2 days! Feel better. :wizard:

It depends on what the cough is for us... I have asthma, so if I get any lung congestion I have to be very careful and work fast. Humibid and Mucinex (yucky commercials) are tablet forms of expectorant. If you have a cough where it feels like you can't get things moving, you take a dose of this and drink a TON of water and it will break it up. If the cough is a tickle I have better luck treating the congestion problem, which prevents the tickle. For a general cough Delsym is great, and it doesn't taste bad, which is a welcome relief.

A prescription cough syrup with codeine is Halotussin. Helps for the Bronchitis cough.
Just started using Mucinex this year, would rather a tablet than a nasty tasing syrup for an expectorant.

I'm not advising you to do this, but I was told by a pharmacist that if you have a bad cough and don't have a good cough med, but have a pain reliever with codeine in it, take the pain reliever and it will work the same.

Speaking strictly of over the counter stuff, I've actually had a lot of luck with Comtrex Deep Chest Cold. I'm not coughing nearly as much with it in me as I do when I get to the end of the dosage period (4 hours).

Hope you find somethin' ! :earboy2:

I love the Robitusson Cough Gelcaps - they transport in the purse nicely, and work well. Plus all that's in it is just cough medicine - no decongestants or expectorants which play havoc with my high blood pressure.

OK. May sound strange (and no one else has mentioned it), but we use Benadryl. Knocks it right out. There used to be a cough medicine called Benalyn, it was a liquid form of dyphenhydramine (Benadryl.) Tablets or liquid work great. Works great for motion sickness, too.

Thanks for all the suggestions!
I went to the drugstore and bought Delsym. I had never heard of it till today. I just took a dose so hopefully I will have a break from coughing soon!

If I don't get better in a day or so I will call the doctor and see if I can get something with codeine. I am starting to get desperate! Just now my 4-year-old said, "Mommy, you cough REALLY loud!" :)
