So, I'm allergic to sulfa

Me too!! I did not get the mouth blisters but I did break out in hives all over my body. Hope you feel better!!

Mu mom is allergic to sulfa too. She was told that if she ever took it again it could be fatal, her reaction was so severe.

My DD is allergic to amoxicillin. Found that out when she was a baby. One dose and her face swelled so bad her eyes almost closed shut. I want her to wear a medic alert bracelet and she refuses. She just got her associates in pre-nursing studies and based on a professor and his idiotic statement that you outgrow these allergies she wants to take it again. She's an adult so I can't stop her. I just remind her that the risk isn't worth the experiment.

I probably should have said, I am allergic to amoxicillin, too. Sounds like a lot of people have these two allergies.

I developed an allergy to sulfa. I used it too much and created an allergy. I used those sulfa nose drops for an extended period of time. At the time we found the allergy, I was taking sulfa and penicillin and they mistakenly thought it was the penicillin. Instead it was the sulfa. Since those were the two most common drugs when I grew up, I had used both of them a lot.

FlyingDumbo, I'm sorry for what you're going through, know how miserable it is and sending prayers you feel better soon . I'm also allergic to sulfa, in my case I broke out in horrible blisters (think cigarette type burns) all over and had respiratory issues. My DD is allergic to penicillin, terrible hives and eyes swell shut :(. My heart goes out to all who are allergic to certain meds, as I know the aggravation and fear. :worried:

*DisneyJamieCA ~ so sorry about your DD's finger and hope she's feeling better.

I was in first grade when we discovered my sulfa allergy. I have no idea what I was taking the drug to get over, but I do remember the enormous hives.

I'm sitting in class and my ankle starts itching. The teacher notices me scratching and asks what's wrong. I say I think I have a mosquito bite. She looks and says, "That's the biggest mosquito bite I've ever seen!" (The thing was huge, like the size of the bottom of a Coke can.) She looks me over and there are more. Next thing I know I'm in the nurse's office and my mom is on the way to the school. My teacher teased me about that "mosquito bite" until I left the lower school after sixth grade!

DD18 is allergic to sulfa. We found out when she was around 2 years old. She was given it right before we went on a camping trip. Her entire body swelled up and was covered in red dots plus her fingers, toes and ears turned black.

We went to a tiny 2 room emergency room and they gave her benedryl which was like a miracle.

She has had minor medical issues over the years and I am always sure to mention the allergy.

I am also allergic to Sulfa drugs. It has been so long since I was found to be allergic to it I can't remember what happens. I just know that it is in my file and I make sure Dr.'s know it before giving me drugs.

Same here however, while not Allergic (sensitive) to but, Drs. Are still going with Allergic. I had mild reaction except for a leg calf pain, swollen enough that it was difficult to walk on.

It sounds like you going through a very stressful period. Are you able to get any time to yourself to just wind down a bit? I know it's hard when you have a newborn, but try to forge some time out for yourself every day if you can. Take a bath, read a book, listen to music, light a candle, etc. This will help boost your immunity as well as make you feel better. There is a book called The Wellness Book you might find helpful. http://www.amazon.com/The-Wellness-Book-Comprehensive-Stress-Related/dp/0671797506

MAs should not be giving out medical advice over the phone, IMO. But regionally, it might happen, idk.

I am also allergic to Sulfa.

I understand what you are advising and have seen first hand the value of. Our Adult son is currently in therapy for a torn tendon following surgery.

He only took pain meds. immediately following surgery (Onycontin) not wishing to be on it too long. He then toughed it out when pain had lessened. He is in a therapy/wellness centre program here in Canada.

He has about 6 more wks. The therapist said he's ahead of schedule. He has found it to be so supporting for his needs. They have ie aroma therapy while he is there, and start the session with a group prayer.

I found out I was allergic to sulfa at age 3. Broke out in horrible hives all over.

My son took Bactrim last year for his acne. On day 5 he developed hives on the inside of his forearms. It was a pretty mild reaction as drug reactions go but he won't be taking it again. It's a shame because it did a great job clearing the acne.

Sorry this rant is long. . .

It is frustrating enough without having non professionals guise themselves as other then. While this has not happened to me I do have a sister-in-law whom was an RNA now retired. She has been trying to tell me since March that what is ailing me is Kidney Stones.

My Dr(s) with Specialists have as yet not been able to diagnose! I've had many tests done b/c Gall Bladder was suspected. Ultra Sounds, (Gall Bladder &. Bladder), HIDA test, Colonoscopy, Endoscopy, Blood work, and a visit to ER b/c my blood pressure from my pain level one day alarmed me so much.

My next Dr. Appt. is with an Urologist b/c since March I've had TRACE amt of blood in my urine. Drs. Have told me there are NO STONES. DSIL is still insisting it's stones.

In one way I do hope she's right as the other possibilities disturb me more. But, constantly asking me ie Do you still have blood in your urine? When they only test it when they ask for a sample. That has only been twice since March.

I've started to simply answer yes. If it wasn't that she lives with DMIL (89) who has a pace maker and other ailments; and the only way we can visit her, I'd not be in her "company". Oh how I'd like to explicit that "" word!

Is anyone here able to tell me if Kidney Stones can have Gall Bladder like symptoms anyway?

Thank you everybody <3 Physically, she is doing really well. Emotionally, it's been (and will be) a tougher road, but all things considered, she's doing amazing.

I have a sulfa allergy, or so my mother tells me. I don't remember it. Anyway, I was in the hospital for orthopedic surgery and they said that they could not give me celebrex because of my sulfa allergy.

You have my sympathy with the reaction. I had a similar, horrible reaction to diflucan. Very painful sores on my mouth and face. Absolutely miserable. I took ibuprofen to try to get some relief. They took a while to heal but finally went away.

I can sympathize. While I've not been confirmed to be allergic, I do have reactions to sulfa. Headaches, nausea, hives. The doctor basically gives me Keflex now whenever I need antibiotics.
I would be up a creek because Keflex is the only med I know I cannot take. It makes me violently ill.

I'm so sorry for your daughter. And for you - it stinks when our kids are hurting.

I'm allergic to all the 'cillans and sulpha drugs. Like a few other posters, I've been allergic so long, I don't remember the specific reaction. Hives with the 'cillans, I think.

A few years ago, one of my kids had pinkeye and I caught it from her (or thought I had because my eyes itched). Rather than take the time to see my own doctor, I just used some of her drops. Which contained sulpha. So my case of maybe pinkeye turned into a horrible case of allergy-based pinkeye. I didn't know there was such a thing before that. I swore to my doctor I would never again self-medicate.

I had an anaphylactic reaction to sulfa many years ago while taking it over 7 days. Before it went into full-swing I had a floaty, hallucination type spell and then felt my throat swell.

Since then I've found that there are many substitutes for any condition that might have required sulfa in the past.

Good luck in treating your condition!

Would you mind sharing the names of your substitutes? Thanks

Add me to the list - allergic to sulfa and I've now developed a latex allergy.
Sulfa = blotchy, itchy, hot red hives all over
Latex = itchy itchy itchy rash

Both make me scratch myself until I break skin and start bleeding. Bliss.....:sad2:
