Not that anybody here knows me, but I have taken up a new hobby.

My whole family loves Indian food, and we were going out about every 2 weeks for it. Problem is, or was, that it was pretty expensive, though it shouldn't be, as the ingredients are not all that expensive. It was costing us about $100 every time we went out.

So, I decided to learn how to make my own. First I started with books, and that was OK, but then I found this website:

I can't post links yet, so I will do this...

Show Me The Curry dot com.

Enjoy.

BTW, almost all recipes come with a video on how to make them.

We find Indian food so much more comforting, as compared to Western comfort food.

If you can find cookbooks by Madhur Jaffrey (I think I spelled her name correctly)--her recipes are excellent!

LOVE Indian food. It is possible to cook it at home, it's especially good if you have an Indian specialty food store locally to get all of the spices fresh.

Thankyou for the link! I've never even had the opportunity to try Indian food...some of those recipes look good!

We recently went to an Indian/Catholic dual ceremony wedding. They served a buffet of both "American" and Indian food. I took that opportunity to try at least a bite of everything on the Indian side. Most of it I loved! I would love to learn how to make some of those dishes. :thumbsup2

Mmmm, I love Indian foods. I can make a few curry dishes, but haven't really explored much else. I'll have to check out your link.

I have learned to cook at least one "signature" dish from many different ethnic cuisines because of going out to expensive restaurants. I decide I can surely make food at home that will taste authentic but not break the bank. Our favorites are:

Thai- I make about 7 or 8 different dishes and they are all great.
Lebanese/Middle Eastern
Moroccan
Cuban
Peruvian
Indian
Chinese
Greek
Italian

I've tried Korean, Georgian, and Japanese sushi, but they didn't turn out as good as what we can get out.

I'm just learning how to cook Indian food too. A friend of mine gave me a cookbook and 11 different bottles of Indian spices for my birthday. I thought it was such a cool gift.

My family has really enjoyed some of the dishes.

I cook indian food alot!!!

go to youtube and look up vahchef. He has a gazillion recipes you can try.

My favorite is manjulaskitchen. she is a grandma type lady and her recipes are sooo good and authentic.

when you take the spices out of the small bags that they sell in indian stores, put them in small airtight containers and the smell will stay fresh a long time.

Also lots of indian foods require the basics: fresh ginger and garlic. You can grate those and put them in icecubes and freeze them. Usually one icecube size 1 tb is what is usually needed for most indian food.

If you love saag paneer. They sell the cubed paneer(cheese) at the indian stores or you can also buy tofu and substitute. They sell it at Krogers or any grocery store. Buy the one that is the hardest. The one you would put in salad. When ready to use, just saute it in a little oil and voila (just like paneer cheese)

We actually have 2 of them within 2 miles. Not sure the spices are super fresh, as they come in bags, but they aren't "old".

We had a neighbor in an apartment building many years ago that was from India that liked to cook at 3AM. I can't stand to be around curry to this day because of the overpowering smells from her apartment. We never did figure out why she cooked in the middle of the night either (she worked regular day hours).

okay, someone post a simple recipe please!!! I have never had Indian food, and I have always wanted to try it.

We have Indian about every other week. I grew up in a country with a lot of Indians and I grew up eating it a few times per month.

In fact, tonight I made chapatis and a chicken/potato/peanut Indian stew with Graham Marsala and some other spices on top of basmati.

Part of my complaint is the most US Indian places are Northern Indian and I grew up eating Southern Indian.....I like both, but for me the Southern Indian is the most comforting.

You might try Aarti Party on the Food Network. Aarti won the Next Food Network Star competition and has her own show on Sunday mornings. Tomorrow they will air her second episode.

She wasn't my favorite, but she will invariably cook Indian food. ;)

OMG, she won? I missed the last few episodes and forgot to check to see who ended up winning. She was cute but I was hoping that if she did win they would NOT actually call the show Aarti Party
At least it'll be about Indian food which I do love!

indian food is VERY simple to make, the only thing that really is intimidating is the spices.. but once you get used to cooking with them, its a bereze.

Make sure you are stocked with Ginger, Garlic, Coriander, and Cumin.
Make the investment in Ghee (clarified indian butter) it really does make a difference.. and take your time.. a good meal with tender meat needs patience.. don't over heat let it simmer...

(for me homemade Indian food is for special occasions.. there is a buffet style take out down the street from me where i can get enough food to feed 4 of us for 2 meals (dinner and lunch) for $24. including 4 meats, 8 veggies, 4 naans, and about 16 cups of cooked rice and dessert.. ) much cheaper to go there.. but it tends to be spicer than at home.

I love Indian food but won't cook it at home because I have a very open layout and don't like that the drapes and everything else have a curry smell after even when I have the vent on full blast.
