I found out this week that I am pregnant. I would say around 4 or 5 weeks. I have not been to the doctors yet........they want to see me March 8. Anyhow, I am not a very good eater, well lets say I do not eat a lot..........kiwi and toast for breakfast, celery and nuts for lunch, a granola bar here and there and then whatever for dinner. I make sure my other 2 children eat much more healthier than I do! Anyhow with my other 2, before and during I ate so much cereal and I didn't really even think twice about a multi-vitamin than I did not take before I got pregnant with them. Now, for whatever reason, I just do not eat cereal and I rarely take a multi-vitamin. So needless to say, I am now freaking out about my folic acid intake before I got pregnant and the weeks I was pregnant and didn't know it. I now take a multi-vitamin(I had them in the cabinet, just never really thought to take them) although I should get vitamins for pregnant mommies. I also try to eat foods with some amount of folic acid. I am so worried now. Is there anyone else out there that was in this same boat and everything turned out fine. I am only 32 and I work out everyday, I am a pretty healthy weight,( a little on the lighter side)...................gosh I am so nervous now. Sorry for the rambling!

I think you'd be surprised to learn that folic acid is in lots of stuff. Especially cereal!

Keep taking those vitamins and you'll be fine. Congrats!!

Try not to worry too much. While taking a prenatal vitamin with folic acid is highly recommended, many moms don't and have perfectly healthy babies. What I do suggest is that now you know you're pregnant, do one of two things. 1) Ask your doctor's office tomorrow if you can come in and get some prenatal samples until you see him/her to get a prescription or 2) go to Walgreens/CVS/Wal-Mart/etc to buy a bottle of over-the-counter prenatals.

Congrats on your pregnancy!

Thanks for the replies..........I guess getting all worried is part of being pregnant.

You got it!! Just start taking a prenatal now, no biggie. I'm sure the little bean is fine.

Congrats!

Oh I think I remember that the spinal cord isn't even fully developed until the 6th or 8th week? Look that up. But that gives you several weeks to take folate.

I am 27 and on the underweight side, 5'3" and 100 lbs...probably eat less than you on most days. Gotta love genetics for this one. I do work out almost everyday and chase the kids on top of it. I have NEVER taken vitamins unless it was the pregnacy vitamins that my dr gave me when I became preggo with my first. I did have to stop taking them because I became so violently sick with her. I did not take vitamins at all during my last 2 pregnancies. I am anemic so we did keep an eye on that but was ok. My pregnancies were fine and so were all of my kids. Good luck and Congrats!!!

Chin up! I'm REALLY bad about remembering to take my vitamins so I started keeping them on my headboard, right by the lamp. I had to reach over them to turn off the light! Needless to say, I started taking them regularly. Just remember that you've got to consume more whlie your preggo. You seem to be more of a grazer than an eater, and your snacks foods are some of the better choices (nuts, fruit, etc). If I could have followed some of that a little better! :) I tried to eat a lot of salads with some form of protein, peanut butter, lots of veggies.

Stay close to your diet and you'll be in great shape. Keep a food journal if you are really concerned. That way you can track your intake. Congrats!

All we can do is take the best care we know how. The vast majority of outcomes are healthy even in much more unhealthy people than you are on your worst day. And congratulations!

Most bread has folic acid added in so with your toast for breakfast, you probably have it covered.

Do not panic. I was unable to eat or take vitamins during any of my three pregnancies. All three girls turned out perfectly healthy. If you can keep vitamins down take some and eat as best you can. Considering how my pregnancies went my daugthers should have had every bad thing possible but didn't.

Thanks all. You all are easing my mind a bit. I am just really concerned that I didn't eat the right amount of folic acid before I got pregnant.

Whether you had enough before or not, the important thing is doing it while your preggo. You are very concious of it and you'll make the right decisions.
