Was considering doing HHI to get more points for less, but then people mentioned annual dues being higher and less chance to get VWL. That would matter a lot to my DH. How much higher???? I am looking at 150 points at VWL and 200 points at HHI.

I am mainly afraid that with 150 points I won't have enough!!!!!!

for pricing/buying information:

here is a thread for understanding the general differences between buying resale and direct.

here is (usually accurate) current pricing for contracts purchased directly.

there is a link above for resale listings.

to get an idea of annual dues after you have paid off the upfront costs of the contract:

here is a link to historical annual dues per point for the different DVC resorts.

there is a link to point charts in the top right hand corner - i'd look at the 2011 charts to get an idea of how many pts you'd need for the resort you prefer at the time of year you tend to travel.

2010 dues at HHI are $5.567/pt
2010 dues at VWL are $5.199/pt

If I were buying DVC to stay at WDW - and especially at VWL then that is where I would buy. Do you have a room type and length of stay that you are looking at doing? That will help decide the number of points that you will need to purchase.

If you were going to buy HHI and take your chances at the 7month window, you should consider buying SSR instead of VWL. The price per point is lower and the dues are lower than VWL, so you could get more points.

Obviously - you would not be gauranteed VWL for any trip without the 11 month window, but you werent originally planning to have that option at WDW anyway...just something to think about...

"Enough" points....that depends completely on you. There are a lot of ways to stretch points - and a lot of ways to never have enough.

We travel (usually) every other year on 150 points - that gives us a very nice week long trip in a two bedroom with out kids - we spread out - in October.

Or we can go more often and stay in a studio. Or a one bedroom. We can go midweek (point adjustments recently have made this somewhat less attractive). We can stay for part of the trip on cash if we really want a few more days (which we have done). We can (but haven't) rent points from someone else once in a while and transfer them into our account.

A lot of DVCers stay offsite or in a value on "arrival day" and save those points. Some book a hotel over at Universal to get those benefits at those parks for part of the trip.

What we can't do is put the extended family in a couple of Grand Villas over Christmastime. Or take multiple trips a year. But I'm not sure how we'd choose to afford multiple trips per year - Disney gets expensive and we have other uses for our time and money. Moreover, not sure that we'd want to afford the dues bill on more points!

You can always add more points later as well. Once you own, an add on can be done in 25 point increments for cash, 50 if you finance. So as your financial situation changes, you can add more points.

Crisi makes a good example about how to stretch 150 points by going every other year, thereby being able to bank points so the family can stay in a 2BR. On the other hand, if you intend to go every year, then 150 pts at VWL won't be enough for an entire week's stay regardless of season. If you stay just four or five nights, then most any season would be doable on 150 pts. But, that's where it comes down to your own personal needs in terms of vacationing at WDW. Determine that first, then look at how many points you would need to fulfill those needs. . .or as is the case with many of us on here, the desires to be at the World. . .;)

You can do a week in a studio for less than 150 points anytime except over Christmas and Easter.

Of course, if you want a bigger unit than a studio....150 points won't do a full week any time of year.

What time of year are you planning on going and what sort of room do you need? Then look at the point charts.

There is a link at the top of the page that shows you the points charts. Look over the resorts for 2011 and see what your points could get you if you plan to go yearly, etc.

You can definitely make 150 points work at VWL, depending on when you go and what you want. Once you own, you will have a feel for it and can always add on more points through Disney in small increments to get to what you want.

And, if you don't go one year, then you can bank and that would give you 300 to use every other year--quite a bit!

Good luck!

Another way to make 150 points work.

Lets say every year you do a 170 point trip.

year 1, use 150 current year points, 20 year two points. Balance 130 points
year 2, use 130 current year points, 40 year three points, balance 90 points
year 3, use 90 year 3 points, 80 year four points, balance 20 points.
year 4 - bank 20 points into year five. Take a cruise for cash. Go to Mexico, go skiing in Utah, stay home - but don't use DVC points.
year five, use 20 year four points, 150 year five points.
year six, start over again......

I have 150 VWL points and it's definitely not enough !!! LOL! Actually, it works for right now. We can get about 8 nights a year in a studio. We will eventually add-on so that we can do one beds or two trips a year, but it was what we could afford to pay cash for to start. Plus we wanted the 11 month booking window for any December trips.

As others have noted, 150 is plenty for some, far too few for others, how will you use them? If you must have VWL most trips, I'd buy there but if you're flexible including not going during high demand times for DVC (sometimes different than for WDW in general) or want to try multiple resorts but VWL more than most, owning elsewhere may work for you. As noted, SSR is the best balance of price and value for WDW for many in that you can guarantee something at 11 months out, the buy in price is less than most and the RTU is to 2054 instead of 2042. I do believe that SSR is the best balance for many people. I am also convinced that there is no situation where it's reasonable to buy HH or VB simply to get cheaper points and use at WDW. However, if one plans to use at a given resort part of the time, the negatives go away very quickly, esp for HH for summer usage. IF the cost spread gets large enough (HH/VB points get cheap enough), my opinion would change at some point.

Feel free to call or email us at The Timeshare Store and we will be happy to help you determine what size contract would be a good match for your families needs.

We do live just about 200 miles from Hilton Head which does add to its appeal.

We like VWL but have not ruled anything out yet.
