so how does travel insurance work for hurricanes?

I am not worried about my departure on the 10th but this is certainly cutting it close.

I've never purchased travel insurance so curious how it works in an instance like the one facing many cruisers departing Friday.

If the cruise is NOT cancelled, does the insurance apply if you just choose not to go?

Depends on what insurance you bought. I would imagine if the cruise goes then you would only be covered for choosing not to go if something else got cancelled (like your flights got cancelled) or if you had cancel for any reason insurance, which is more expensive.

Highly unlikely, but it all depends on the company. Call a couple of them and see what each one offers.

I was just looking at TravelGuard and here are a couple items:

Insurance must be purchased 24 hours prior to when the hurricane has been named. Once the hurricane has been named, Trip Cancellation and Interruption losses resulting from the hurricane are excluded from the coverage of the policy.

If the storm directly affects your travel arrangements or accommodations, you are entitled to Trip Cancellation or Trip Interruption benefits. For example: an airport is closed due to the high winds; you are forced to evacuate your hotel/resort; the road you are traveling is impassable due to high water. On the other hand, if you choose to cancel a trip based on what you think might happen — and not because the inclement weather has directly affected your travel arrangements — that would be considered a matter of choice — not a direct loss to your arrangements.
So it sounds like the cruise or flight to the cruise has to be cancelled in order for benefits to kick in. Not going on the cruise b/c it will be cloudy, rainy, windy, 'wavy', etc is not covered unless you have the 'cancel for any reason' clause which covers only 50% of the cost AND must be purchased within 15 days of initial deposit date.

These details are why I've never purchased travel insurance for cruises. I did purchase one for our week in Nassau but it was more for medical / emergency coverage.

The amount covered may depend on the plan you choose - I have looked heavily into the cancel for any reason due to my chronically ill and difficult to board pet (I know, I know) and there are options that cover you fully, they are a couple hundred more maybe but they exist.

Anybody know if trip insurance will cover the cost of Disney resort if my flights are moved (did not book flights through Disney) but I have Disney insurance

Did you book your Disney resort as part of your DCL reservation? Or if it is a separate reservation, did you purchase travel insurance on the resort reservation? The insurance offered through DCL only covers those aspects of your vacation booked through DCL.

I believe WDW is working with guests who are impacted by the hurricane. Give them a call to see if they'll help.

Enjoy your vacation!

I'll add.... Was the trip purchased with a premium credit card? Sometimes they come with travel insurance.
