I think I will love it, but my husband dislikes "cream of" soup type recipes. I am thinking of giving it a whirl this weekend to see if he likes it or notices the taste of those soups. HAve you guys tried it? Can you really taste the cream of chicken and cream of mushroom soup? My husband does not taste them when I put them in pot roast.

I grew up on it. I like it. But your DH will notice the soup.

We tried it once a few months ago.
Found the recipe on pinterest. We haven't had it since then. It was ok. Not our favorite but not our least favorite either.

Fresh cream of soups are sooo stinking easy to whip up .. I quit using the canned stuffed in recipes in the last year. I havent done the dugger tater tot recipe, exactly , but have made it , my boys love it . Me , not so much , but not a huge tot fan .

I've not made the Dugger version but I have made one with cheddar cheese soup instead of the cream soups. Really good & now I'm craving it.

This sounds better! I have cheddar cheese soup on hand, I can substitute! Thanks for the idea, he will probably like this a lot better!

My husband introduced me to this but we make cheeseburger french fry casserole. He used cheddar cheese soup and golden mushroom soup. Now I make a cheddar cheese soup by making a roux, add milk, add shredded cheddar. And I found this (http://www.mushroom-appreciation.com/golden-mushroom-soup.html) so I don't have to use the canned version.

Brown ground beef, add in soups and some extra cheese. Put in Pyrex pan. Cover with the Ore Rida extra crispy fries and bake according the fries directions.

This is in no way, shape, or form healthy. But I am craving it so it is on my next menu. LOL

I don't mix in the soup. I put the cooked beef w/ a bit of onion in the bottom, spread the soup on top of it & then the tater tots. Sometimes I put a little shredded cheese on top as well.

I haven't made it in YEARS. Think I will next week.

I had to google the recipe to see what is was. :crazy2: It sounds terrible, like really really bad. I don't like tater tots to begin with but wouldn't they get soggy under all that soup:confused3

I don't know anything about the Duggars, but Tater Tot Casserole (with various soups) has been around forever. Ive heard of it made with tomato soup too, but the cheese soup sounds much better, lol.

tater tot hotdish (hell, ANY hot dish) is a MN staple. How can you go wrong with beef, veggies, creamy sauce, and fried potatoes???

that being said, I haven't made it in years...going on at least 6 b/c I know my younger son has never had it.

I might have to make it soon. I grew up on it - it's served in lunch rooms (school AND corporate) around here still...and it IS really good.

Mine is meat browned with onion and Lawry's. top with corn, top with 2 cans of cream of - 1 celery, 1 mushroom. Top that with tater tots. Cook until tots are done - which is usually close to 45 minutes.

And no, they do not get soggy...

I had many variations of this dish at many a church dinner when I was growing up. :thumbsup2

Ew, how can you NOT notice soup in a pot roast? I hate any recipe with canned, creamed soup in it. I'm more of a purist. I like my food fresh. And, just calling that recipe, the 'Duggar' anything, would keep me away from it. I think the Duggars are possessed by some strange entitiy and it's NOT God.

You throw it in the crockpot. Beef, potatoes, carrots, celery, packet of Lipton beefy onion soup mix and cream of mushroom soup. 8 hour later you have yummy potroast.

I am going to try the ground beef with onions, garlic, and green peppers. I am going to top that with the cheddar cheese soup, then the tots, then I will bake. I'll let you all know how it turns out. We are in a recipe rut, I am looking for a few new things to add to the rotation.

My biggest issue with the recipe sites is the reviews are crazy, people change the entire recipe and then say they didn't like the original that they in no way followed. And the Duggar tot recipe has a million great reviews, which seems unreal, there has to be someone that did not like it. That is why I asked here, people are more honest.

Of course there are people who don't like it. I made something like this years ago. While I won't go out and say that it "tasted bad", it's obviously something that is so processed and so not good for you. These dishes remind of things that people make in order to make a lot of food for a lot of people that's filling and can stretch their dollar--but horrible for you. I am quite amazed when I go on allrecipes.com, for instance, print out a bunch of "5 star" recipes and they end up being crap that I wouldn't feed my dog. I just have to think "what are people eating? and this is what they think a 5 star recipe is?" I have no issue with eating a high calorie, over processed meal like this occasionally. But to even begin to think it's fabulous is a mystery to me.

As for the cream of soups--I don't care for them myself. As the busy cook in my home, in desperation, I try a lot of recipes using them in hopes that i'll stumble upon one that I "don't notice the soup" but it hasn't happened yet. The closest I've come is to making a tuna casserole with Campbell's Cream of Chicken with Herbs. It does taste a lot better than using Cream of Mushroom/Chicken/Celery for some reason.

This is why I Pinterest. I have found a ton of recipes to try on that site. I like that they come from all over the place. There are a lot of food blogs out there. I like that I can take a quick look at something that looks good and read the ingredients. This way I know if I am willing to cook it (I dismiss most recipes once I see the words can of) and if everyone in my family would be willing to eat it. Then I can pin it to use later. Like a virtual recipe box. LOVE IT!

I also had to google the recipe because I couldn't figure out what could be so disgusting sounding about tater tot casserole.

I make this occasionally as a quick and easy winter "comfort food" and DH & I enjoy it just as much as the kids, but I make it as a version of shepards pie (sauteeing the meat and veggies and making my own roux and sauce so it's not dry). We just top it with tater tots instead of mashed potatoes. They get nice and crispy. (If I'm limited on time, I may even cook the tater tots in the oven on a cookie sheet while I'm preping cooking the meat and veggies on the stovetop.)

The Duggar version seems like a lot of canned soups, no vegetables, and I also would think the tots would not get crispy after they're soaked with the liquid.
