Our school system here in Iceland is different than in the US. Kids here start highschool/college at 16 and it goes until they´re 19-20 (depends on the individual school whether it´s 3-4 years).

My oldest DS applied for one of the top 4 schools in Iceland, and in fact the one that turns accepts the lowest % of applicants and we just found out that he got accepted.

I´m so happy for him, and so glad that he now can see how all his hard work pays off in the "end".

Congratulations! Getting accepted to an awesome school is a great feeling. :goodvibes

Thanks! It truly is an awesome feeling and I could tell he was so relived when he recieved the letter. He had found out just hours earlier that one of his friends had not been accepted into his school of choice (other school) and this built up a lot of stress and tension with him.

I think it is awesome that your son got into the school of his choice, especially with it being the tougher school to get acceptance.

Congrats!

Congrats!!party:

Is this level of school then comparable to our college/university level (which is the same thing here) where they then have a degree and move into the workforce or on to further education (like medical school) or is there another level he will attend after this?

Thanks. He will move on to university level. However, lots of the curriculum is on par with what is taught at universities abroad. For example the business high school I teach at (private school), teaches the same books in economics that I read at a top university in Denmark (ranks nr.3 of business schools worldwide http://uk.cbs.dk/about_cbs_campus/quality/accreditation_ranking)

Your "college" and "university" levels are different, correct? I THINK your college level is more like our community college level where they learn more of a trade vs a degreed program-a plumber vs an accountant type comparison, right?

It´s a bit hard to explain. After elementary school (when they are 16) kids normally either go to high school (if they plan on going to university afterwards) or they go to what we call "trade school". That is where they would learn to be a plumber, hairdresser, electrician etc.

Ok, so your elementary school encompasses what we call elementary and middle school (which would be kindergarten through 8/9th grade so ages 5-14/15) and then high school is 9/10-12th grade (ages 14/15-17/18 depending on when thy have a birthday) then on to "university" or to trade school. Your high school and our high school would be fairly comparable except most of our high school students don't go away for high school but they go away for university/college.

I think giving kids the option to go into trade school after what would be our sophomore year or 10th grade year wouldn't be a bad option for a lot of kids. It would certainly bring up the US level of high school aged kids to be more comparable to other nations around the world.

Well they choose either high school or "trade school" when they are 15/16. Most of our high school students don´t go away for school either, but they still get to choose which school they would like to apply for and most choose a school close to home.
