I'll start with a quick recap of the last 6 weeks (hint: lots of Dr. visits):

1)DD11 fractures thumb, not sure how long it will take to heal
2)DD11 sick...misses 4 days of school..I miss work
3)DD7 sick...misses 2 days of school...I miss more work
4)DD7 develops ear infection...misses 2 more school days...miss even more work
5)DD11 thumb heals...YEAH!!...Oh wait...
6)DD11 sick again...misses 3 days of school...I miss some more work (I do still have a job, don't I?)
7)DD7 now sick again...misses 2 days of school...you know the rest..
FINALLY...TODAY... I have 2 healthy, happy kids and a beautiful sunny, warm day....everyone's going to school / work tomorrow...things are looking up....
8) DD11 falls off swing in back yard and fractures wrist.

So, we are less than 2 weeks away from our vacation and she will likely be in a cast. We booked CBR mainly for the pool that we will likely not use now. I want to cry. :sad1: 1/2 of me feels like we need a vacation more than ever, 1/2 of me wants to just say forget it. I can't imagine how sad she'd be not being able to swim. I wouldn't know whether or not to let DD7 swim anyway - unfair to one of them whichever I choose. But, I also think DD11 will feel like it's her fault if we cancel. It's a lose / lose situation.

DD11 doesn't seem to be in much pain, for now, thank goodness. This just happened a few hours ago though. I don't know what tomorrow will bring. Anyone ever bring a child in a cast before? Were they miserable? I am open to cancelling. My husband (works in construction) will probably be home from work regardless of whether or not we go. He doesn't think we should cancel. I just don't know!!!:confused3

Thanks for listening to me whine. Just needed to get it out!

When a girl I know broke her wrist, they were able to get a cover for her cast so she could swim. It was like bubble wrap and they would inflate it with a straw. She would just wear it over her cast so she could go swimming. She used it several times that I know of. Ask your doctor if they know where to get one. She could swim and then that problem is solved!

Oh, that is a crazy couple of weeks! You know what they say, when it rains it pours!! Hugs to you all and am glad that your dd isn't in a lot of pain!!

I have read on this very board of waterproof casts -- ask about that when you go to the Dr.

I would definately let younger dd swim even if big sis can't -- there is plenty to do at Disney where it won't be a hardship; like visit arcade, browse gift shop, write postcards (if hand okay to write!), taste test ice cream, get hair wrap, etc.

Have a great trip and hope any further sickness/injury is avoided!!!

wow, that is a lot for 6 weeks! I know if I missed that much time from work there is no way I could take a vacation on top of that

waht about the kids? I am all for taking disney trips nad pulling kids, but they seem to have lost os much time lately.

I can see why you are on the fence, good luck with your decision!

The definately make a cover for the cast so your DD can swim. They actually make 2 kinds of covers. The first one is for showering and the second is for swimming. I bought the showering one for my DS a year ago when he broke his arm (it was Autumn so he didn't need the one for swimming). It worked great. I bought it in a medical supply store (not a pharmacy, they are not the same thing). Just look in the phone book under Medical supply store or medical supplies.

There is a "special" cast that is now availoable and it can get wet. A boy in my DD13 class broke his wrist and has this "special" cast. His mom told me it is great, he can shower with it and even swim. However, her insurance would cover the standard cast but , it cost her $50 out of pocket for the "special" cast. She said it was soooo worth it! Ask the doctor about the waterproof cast.

Make sure to bring a sling, at 2 weeks she is going to be really swollen still. I had my wrist reconstructed a whole bunch of times, my last trip I had had fuzed actually(I'm only 24, have had 7 surgeries on that wrist), I had my arm up in a sling the whole Disney Vacation and thank god for that, it kept swelling down enough it didnt cut circulation.

Make sure to ask for ice packs once in the park as well if needed.

Oh and for getting th cast wet? you can go to any local health store and get what I call the giant condom. I have a picture of it I can show you and post in a couple hours when I get home. I went swimming with it, went on the water rides, had a blast!

Thanks everyone! I had no idea there were special casts or cast covers! That's such a relief! I'm still a little worried about her overall comfort, but time will tell.

DisneyFairytale: Yikes! 7 surgeries? Hope you're all done now! So, should I expect the swelling/pain to get worse? It's not so bad right now. I couldn't even tell it was swollen, but the Dr. said it was. Now it's in the temp. cast, so I don't even know. They told us to watch for numbness, tingling, skin discoloration, and to press her nailbed every couple hours and make sure it turns white, then pink again within 2 seconds. I'm sure I'll be in her room checking on this all night long and to make sure it stays elevated above her heart while she sleeps.
***********

The kids have the whole week of Thanksgiving off, so they will not be missing any additional days for vacation. As for me, we'll find out tomorrow when I go to work how much "trouble" I am in. I am worried, but there was nothing I could do. My MIL said she would take DD11 if she is too swollen/uncomfortable to go to school tomorrow so that I can get back to work. She has 3 sons, so she knows how to take care of broken bones, stitches, etc. very well!

Yes, when it rains it pours. I reread my post and realized I didn't even include the fact that I had to put my 13 y.o. dog to sleep a few weeks ago, too. The more I think about it, we really do need the vacation.

:flower3:Thanks everyone for letting me have a little pity party. I'm going to suck it up now and go count my blessings.

As promised, here is me this April, after I had my wrist fuzed.

and the cast cover we kept in the back pack and took out as needed. You just slide it over the cast.

I VERY strongly suggest a sling so she can rest her arm in elevation as you can see in this picture. My arm was always up and it still swelled lots.
