So few kids

you may want to revisit some of your past comments, You're wanting the old but before it was complaining about what was new (but is now old, like how FP+ worked). Maybe this is almost a "be careful what you wish for". to be fair a lot of people who complained with how FP+ was (the refresh, the pre-planning, etc) are now clamoring for that back, don't know what you had til it's gone perhaps??
I never complained about refresh but the pre-planning with the lack of flexibility. So they over corrected the problem imo & made it worse.

eta: I find it strange that you have committed to memory (or think you have) my complaints of 2-3 years ago. And you keep trying to insist that I have forgotten or changed my complaints. First, I have repeatedly said that we have adapted b/c we go frequently enough that we are ok to miss things. But, my complaints have not changed in general as far as how things impact families with young children. With all due respect, I think I know my own thoughts/opinion better than you or anyone.

My guess (as a parent of a 9-year-old and a 7-year-old) is that many parents are feeling the detrimental effects that a year of interrupted schooling has had on their children and don't want them to miss any more school than necessary. That, and some parents of kids who are too young for vaccines are still not traveling at all.
There weren’t very many school aged kids this past week IMHO, but there were plenty of pre-schoolers. Maybe not quite as many as in the past but still quite a few. I admire them for being so good about wearing their masks. They seemed to be better about it than school aged children last month when I cut my trip short due to so much non-masking—parents and school kids.

One of your comments was about it not being magical refreshing but now you want the ability to refresh but what would stop you if they brought back that exact feature from saying it's not magical feeling like you have to refresh constantly or for a long time to get a desired result. I agree about overcorrecting, it's the Disney way unfortunately. You hated the old way, you hate the new way, you (I actually mean this part generally) want the old way back. It's very much like a don't know what you had til it's gone and be careful what you wish for type situation. Disney reimagines (ironic usage of words) their system to respond to complaints and people who had issues with the prior system are now like "wait a minute bring back that old system"

Honestly though I've long since questioned why you (and others) continue to go to a place they disparage so much. It's understandable on an emotional level but does not make sense for all the complaining going on. If a place is that unsuited to your (generally said) needs stop going much less several times a year or year after year. Or if your issue is the point in your child's life isn't working revisit in several or more years when you don't have a young child (or in other cases a child who is too short, or a child that can't handle the crowds or heat or whatever).

I have noticed that too (just out and about) the youngest kids having the most compliance with masks when they are wearing them. Generally I see elementary aged the same although I can understand how at Disney (or somewhere else like that) might provide a more distraction point for them.

What can I say you spent a lot of time complaining about this and that about Disney :confused3 it was memorable enough, sorry? I guess?

And that’s what most young kids will do when asked to wait in very long lines which is part of pp’s complaint. What could solve that is allowing strollers for longer. And most queues now can accommodate ECV so they can definitely accommodate strollers.
They would probably redesign a lot of the queue. DLR especially would have that difficulty. OMG do you remember PP queue in DLR? That's hard enough for average folks to get into lol. I *think* many of the turnstiles were removed from the queues though right?

Not that it's not a possibility to do that strollers although I gather they worry enough about guest safety with the ECV or wheelchair but disabilities are such a tricky situation. Strollers do vary quite a lot in sizing some being huge others being modest and others quite small, less variations in ECV or wheelchairs There is also a question of what to do with the strollers inside the queues once you made it to the actual attraction. There's thousands and thousands of strollers, where do you put them that doesn't impede anyone, makes it easier to pick it back up, etc actually inside the attraction. As is the stroller parking, while hardly perfect system and takes up space and impedes walkways itself at times, outside an attraction offers the better of the two options (neither being the perfect solution).

USO has a leg up on that part. They have rooms for family swap. Hmm I'm trying to remember if you can take a stroller in there?? I just don't remember. Speaking of other parks what does SeaWorld do on queues? Do they allow strollers in there or do they have stroller parking like Disney? I haven't been to SeaWorld since I myself was a kid and the DISers I know who have been never really got into the stroller or kids in queue conversation.

Perhaps you have me confused with another poster? 🤷‍♀️ I’m not one who would usually use the term “magical”. That’s not my thing. And I was great at refresh so I can’t imagine complaining about that. And goodness, I have said it’s not that it’s not suited for us b/c we have adapted & still find joy & value. That doesn’t make it any less cumbersome for ppl with young kids who can’t go as often.

Well I did initially wonder if I was thinking of someone else so pardon me but I did look just be sure. If I had been wrong I would have wanted to apologize :flower3: . I don't think it was that you didn't use refresh as a strategy with it working but rather not necessarily liking having to do it (or so much) just to get the desired result. A lot of people def. utilized refresh but then disliked that they had to do that just to get a FP they wanted

"But, there is very little magic in trying to refresh for 45 min straight, in wall-to-wall ppl with an impatient toddler hanging off you."

I can't say that I find your comments to exude that you find joy in going (especially with how often you say it's cumbersome, made difficult) but perhaps that's just what you say, how often, and the overall tone which tends to read negative attributes about Disney. You've been really open that it's just not working for those with young kids..so then why continue to go to a place with a young kid. It's like trying to mash something into a mold that doesn't work. I understand you don't want to stop going but if your vocalization on a forum is that Disney has made it so difficult with FP+, with everything and now with Genie+ to tour with a young kid you're probably going to get questions why you actually go more than the one time to figure out it's difficult/cumbersome and it's probably not going to look the best to point the finger at other guests while still going.

I most likely said this in response to someone else discussing “magic” but it’s not generally something I say. But refreshing for 45 min straight is not an example of refreshing working well. WHEN it worked well, it was great. But, maybe that’s not possible with the sheer volume of ppl. It probably worked best when ppl hadn’t caught on to his to use it.

And, since we go often, I think I am in a unique position to observe the things that don’t work. They work for us now b/c DS is no longer a toddler & we have adapted. But, when ppl I know ask for advice for going with their little kids & I try to explain things, I realize how ridiculous it all sounds.

You bring up a great point. I've mentioned before that I kinda wish the limit was amount of times used instead of once per ride, that way someone could potentially use all their allocated LL to ride Dumbo 10 times just to say a number. If the issue they are trying to solve is having too many LL on E-ticket rides, maybe the solutions could be having a limit of 1 LL for those (as much as it would pain me cause I love going on Big Thunder at all hrs of the day) and free-for-all for the less popular ones? 🤔 That could help families with little kids that can go on a limited amount of rides while still putting a cap on the super popular ones.

Then again it might be too confusing.

I mean, it doesn't seem like Disney is super concerned about making things confusing for people given the complication of the system as it currently stands. 😆 This is totally something they could do in the style of the way tiering was with FP+. Tier 1 attractions? You get one reservation, the end. Less popular attractions? If it's available, have at it. And it will almost certainly be available, as those attractions typically didn't run out of FP+ reservations even when there was no limit on the number of times you could rebook the same attraction.

As for my point the OP originally asked about an observation into not seeing as many kids the prior weekend in January. People's assumptions that their difficulties or annoyances or disappointment in Disney is why fewer kids are visiting Disney itself regardless of the time of year (which wasn't actually said in the OP and we have no proof of) in general are just assumptions. Other people on this thread and others threads see kids there and many of them. Ever since I joined the DIS people have been talking about people not going back to Disney and every year Disney proves people (which includes kids) still are coming and will throw down the cash to do so. The pandemic and Genie+ reactions here maybe be clouding that point. That is not to take away from personal feelings like I said, but rather when one projects that out. It'd be nice frankly for Disney to get knocked down a peg or two just not sure if that will happen any time soon to actually make an appreciative difference.

If we agree on nothing else, I'm all in on your last sentence. 😂 We stay onsite and we stay deluxe, so our trips are expensive anyway, but all the new added costs have just made it ridiculous. I wanted to cancel, but I have to be honest about recognizing that I have an addiction lol. I haven't been in 3 years and it's killing me. Disney knows this and is capitalizing on it. To keep it so I can still look at myself in the mirror, I decided Disney won't get any extra money from us regardless of the price increases. We rented DVC points for part of our stay, so that money goes to the DVC member, not Disney. We're paying for G+ and ILL$, so that money is coming from character meals. We typically did several per trip, this time will only do one at most. I see a lot of QS dining in our future. I was going to let my kids build droids in Galaxy's Edge. That money is now going to our transportation to get to and from WDW since they axed magical express. This is my little way of sticking it to Disney. I don't have the willpower to completely back off, but I can at least make sure they're not getting thousands extra from me as a "reward" for all these changes and upcharges that have actually made trips more difficult for my family.

My school district still has an insane quarantine policy where anybody who travels has to stay out of school for ten days, even with a negative test. I'm willing to pull my kids from school for a vacation for a week, but not for 3 weeks.
This is basically why we cancelled our trip. Ours isn’t quite that stringent but it’s not forgiving either!

Fair enough but that's why I said what's to stop that from being how you felt if they brought refresh like they had/worked with FP+ into how Genie+ works. That's an example of wanting something that caused annoyance back

I have no idea why Disney didn't just keep FP+ but monetize it but I do know that people who complained about it back then (or with what you just said it wasn't working well when it was xyz) would then complain if features of the prior system were brought back because there was a reason they complained about it to begin with. I'm not a fan of the park reservation system myself because even though I would actually plan our days out in advanced based on park hours, parties, etc (although I didn't really use FP+ pre-selections to determine which park we would go to first) the park reservations lock me in by restriction (selecting a park ahead of time and only being able to change that if availability was there for another park) rather than me personally locking it, but as reservations are sorta how many places operated/operate currently with the pandemic I've had to sigh and back off feeling as annoyed. We went to the Auschwitz exhibit here and every Saturday and Sunday was booked months (sometimes 4 months) in advance, we knew we wanted to go on the weekday so it worked out but yeah talk about having to lock in your date there..luckily the exhibit's time here was extended something like 2 or 3 times already.

I def. agree on the FP working better the less who knew. I always made that point when people mocked or complained so and so didn't know about FP+..you always wanted it that way because the less who knew the odds are it would work better. Now that's the part that Disney has IMO largely addressed with Genie+. While complicated like always the playing field is more even guests who are there at the parks right then, less pre-knowledge to know with respects to that. You're still going to have advantages and people who learn the ropes faster or better but it's been toned down in how much that can be with Genie+

Even though you and I vacation differently at WDW I totally and 100% understand the feelings behind all of what you've said. Most of the time we shift monies around on vacations in general to accommodate increase in costs (one selecting 1 nicer meal, opting for less days, one excursion, different time of year, less souvenirs, etc) but when you're met with being disappointed with all the charges that have added up it sours even that base aspect to our vacationing.

No changes would be necessary to make it ideal for us b/c we go so often that we have adapted. But the current complexity is just too much. I would argue it’s too much for anyone but especially for ppl with young children who need to take breaks/nap and/or need more flexibility. First thing I would get rid of is park reservations & go back to the ability to park hop all day. While no one loves this change, it’s particularly difficult when you have little kids & see a park is now packed, but your only option is to stick it out or go back to the room. Some other things that I think might work is a FP system more like refresh used to work for FP+. Genie plus doesn’t seem to have enough availability & is very complex. Transportation is also often a nightmare (in general) & again worse for little kids. We have solved that by driving to the parks. But that’s not an option for a lot of ppl. I think bringing back Minnie vans could alleviate this. To be fair, one of my biggest complaints pre-pandemic has been solved. The obnoxious lines for security used to be particularly difficult for young kids. Often with those lines, you would wear down their patience before you even entered the park! The new security screening system is 100 times better.
Alas, here lies the issue I think. The Disney Parks is not this kinda place, either you plan and try to do everything in your list or you go with the flow and do what you can without stressing.
Tbh tho, you say your family goes a lot and personally have adapted so I fail to understand your complains, since as you said, the issues don't affect you. And yet you say no changes and yet mention a lot of things that don't work for you, it's really confusing.

For the reservation and park hoping thing, since it started as a covid measure I don't believe it will change anytime soon unfortunately. At least not this year.

For the packed park thing, well that affects everyone doesn't it? Parents know what they are getting into when taking their kids to the parks, if the kids cannot enjoy it despite the lines then I suppose I would wait for the kids to grow a bit so they can. Unfortunately not everything is for everyone all the time, it all depends on the parents and kids personalities.

A lot of this issues doesn't seem to be Disney Parks issues at all, and sound more like general having little kids issues. Lines are everywhere, paying at the store, for going to the movies, at schools, etc. Transportation issues are the same, it's a hard thing to travel with little kids in general.

To be fair, it’s not something I really want back per se, but when pressed by a pp to give examples of what might make it easier for ppl with kids, it’s what I thought of. But, perhaps, it wouldn’t work either.

I think that’s the unfortunate thing. Disney should be for children. Adults can, of course, go but it shouldn’t be the bolded. And, yes it’s more difficult to travel with young kids in general, I feel Disney should figure out a way to be more accommodating since it was originally designed for families with children. To answer your question, I really don’t have any real complaints now for my family. I responded to this thread originally giving my opinion of why I think it is that we are seeing fewer children in the parks. The pp keeps bringing up my previous complaints years ago that really no longer applies to my actual family. This is us, while we’re not going to stop giving them money, we are going to stop giving them more. Meaning, we’re going every 2 years instead of every year now. And we’ll make cuts on things we used to buy, I’m not going to increase my vacation budget because Disney thinks I should.

Wo

Yes, it’s likely there are many contributing factors. However, you are speaking hypothetically, I am talking about my experience. There has been a RECENT noticeable absence of families with children in the past month. I saw it with my own eyes & DH even commented while we were there. Then I see a thread about it so it’s obviously a change others have noticed too. I have been to wdw 9 times since the start of the pandemic so this is a new change even considering the “highly contagious variants” & the pandemic.
And the pp mentioned, young ppl with a lot of DISPOSABLE income…meaning extra $$$, so it is likely that $15 extra a day doesn’t impact them the same way. Ftr, I am not complaining about the price. It really doesn’t impact us much. My complaint is & has been about how cumbersome it has become to go with young children which speaks to us no longer being Disney’s target demographic which is unfortunate since Walt designed DLR for his family with young children. And unless you have had that experience, you really can’t know how obnoxious Disney has made things. We make it work b/c we go so frequently. But, for ppl going once a year or less often, it’s quite ridiculous now.

I've been saying for years that the parks are more and more adults while not seeing an increase in children. No surprise to me as I believe they are marketing to adults and older families - I think it means more spending. We spent little when the kids were small and the older they got the more we spent on food etc. And they had their own money. Now that they are adults we are all spending money.

I was there this week and I agree with your observation - it wasn't just the number of adults, it was the decreasing number of children. I go to this time every year (minus COVID) and honestly I expected an increase in the number of kids with so many doing creative schooling. I think at some point the price of Disney's hotels (many will only stay onsite), the cost of tickets with limited date use, adding in the cost of Genie+ because doing everything is very difficult in a day with kids and increasing cost of food etc .... Disney trips may not be happening as often for many families as it once did. AND COVID sure opened so many eyes to national/state parks, RV traveling and seeing more of the country. I know many that shifted their vacations to seeing new places and outdoor travel.

I think that’s the unfortunate thing. Disney should be for children. Adults can, of course, go but it shouldn’t be the bolded. I disagree. Disney isn't for children, it is for everyone. It is for adults and children, no matter their age. It is for families - adult families, teen families, young families. It is for adults with their friends, relatives or even alone. Walt didn't build a park for children, he built a park that adults could have fun along with their children. It had to appeal to the adults.

For years Disney has marketed to adults adding more and more that would appeal to them, festivals bigger and longer. Their mission is to make money, adults have money no matter their age, teens have money, bigger they are the more they spend on food, adults buy their overpriced alcoholic drinks, adults by their pricey spirit jerseys, more adults the bigger the lodging space needed. While Disney is very welcoming to young children all you have to do is look at their focus lately to know who they are marketing to. They also have to look forward to competing with Universal once Epic park is open.

Badlands, Yellowstone, and Grand Teton for our family of 4 instead of Disney this year……

No one (including me) is saying adults going is the problem. We are saying that DISNEY as a company has made it harder & harder for ppl with young kids to go. And, that they don’t care b/c they are getting more money out of a new demographic.

I’m saying it. I was there with my kids last week and I find it incredibly strange that adults spend their time at a children’s park. It’s their money and if they feel more comfortable reliving their childhood at an amusement park, hugging on other adults in costumes, then more power to them.

It becomes a problem when these large “children” almost run down my kids or shoulder in front of them in line. I’m sensing that these “caught on camera” physical confrontations will become more and more prevalent as this type of attitude grows.
